302 ho heads

So im looking to build up a 5.0 block that ive got sitting around. I do not have heads so im looking to buy some. I do have a set of C90E 351W heads that i got a while ago, but they are bare and no port work was done so id need to get them machined and but valves/springs/etc.

So my question is what type of heads should i get for a roller cam? how much lift is going to be needed and would it be better to get a set of re-built late model heads or go ahead and grab a set of alluminum ones off of ebay or summit? i was looking at these off of ebay...

289 302 347 351w 5.0 Ford Procomp Aluminum Heads 210cc:eBay Motors (item 370198100189 end time May-16-09 13:26:29 PDT)

thoughts?

also i dont plan to do much to the bottom end other then boreing .030 over and getting new bearings and what not. I do plan to upgrade the cam, but not sure how large im going to go yet.

For the most part aftermarket heads are always better than stock heads, but these particular heads are all wrong for a 5.0 and not particularly good performers. What are your plans for this motor? Is it going to be EFI or carbed? How much power would you like to make?

going into my daily driver, no towing just straight town/highway. and i agree those heads are not good. ive done alot of reading since posting that this afternoon. im hoping for around 300hp off of stock crank, roller cam(not sure how much yet), 1.6 roller rockers, edelbrock performer intake/600cfm carb.

That's not much of a problem, get some remaned GT40's, a cam like the Lunati 51023, and some headers and 300+ hp are yours. The stock crank and rods are good for 400+ hp with nothing more than ARP bolts.

No porting necessary, as cast the Gt40's or C9's will deliver 300+ with enough cam and exhaust.

cam

I was looking at the Lunati cam that you recomended and i saw that it is for an EFI setup is that going to matter since im running a carb setup? i was looking at the comp cam 35-421-8 what do you think about it? is it going to matter that its a "retro-fit" and i have a roller block?

There's nothing EFI specific about that cam and it's not at all compatable with SD EFI, so I don't know why Summit would list it as an EFI cam. The retrofit cam is a small base circle cam intended for use in older blocks with stock Ford lifters and spider retainer assembly. If this is what you have then it's a good choice but it's not necessary if your block is an '87 or newer casting.

i sent you a pm, but i guess i should have answered this question as well.
it does have the spider retainer and i did plan to use the stock lifters. it is a stock roller block but im really not sure how to tell if it is the type that you where talking about in the previous post. im assuming that it is not and that the retro-fit cam would be a bad choice. com cams 35-349-8 is also an option.

I had a look at the Lunati website and they rate it as an EFI cam, but they mean mass air EFI as in what a mustang uses not the truck speed density system. That means this cam is also well suited to a carb motor. Should work well for you.
