300/460 Air Intake Snorkel

I read here a while back that a good upgrade on a 302 or 351 is to find the air intake tube that runs from behind the grill to the airbox from a 300 or 460 motor. the tube sucks more air and is routed for a more direct charge than the 302/351 tube.

so i found one off a 300. it went on my 351 with no problem. but i noticed that the end of the snorkel that sits behind the grill is angled slightly to draw air from behind the driver side headlight. would it make sense to cut the tube slightly so to make an angle whereby it draws air more directly from the grill? this would have the effect of a "ram air" setup. as you drive down the road at speed, air would be forced into the tube as opposed to drawn in the tube.

does this make sense? i wanted to run it by you guys before i made an alterations. i'm sure i'm not the first to think of this...

It may get some ram air effect if you remove the roundover lip.. but I'm thinking lots of water would get rammed in there too when driving in the rain. I was tempted to do the same thing when I got one of these last year but decided to leave it alone for this reason.

i did think of the rain. thats a good point. but i wonder how much would actually get in there? i'll leave it as is. the benefit of this design over the 351 design is enought for now...

I had to cut the lip off my intake to make room for a large trans. cooler, there is a small hole at the bend of the air intake inside the engine compartment to allow water to exit. I have had no problems with water getting in and we get MONTHS of rain here.

I cut the angle off & trimmed the vertical rubber surround at the edge of the grill as well. I put a 3/16 hole at the end of the tube where it sweeps up to the filter box. No water in the filter ever.

i looked for a small hole in the snorkel for a water exit before i installed it, but there wasn't one.

based on the input here, water isn't a concern. i'll drill a small hole just in case. i think cutting off that angle will make a big difference in air flow.
