460 motor 4 spd transmission

I have a 78 4x4 F150 with a 300-6 and a 4 spd. I also have a 76 F150 4x2 with a 460 and automatic. I want to put the 460 in the 78 4x4 with the 4 spd., will the 460 and 4spd bolt right up or will it be a lot of work to accomplish this?

Thanks for the help.

yes, that tranny will work behind the 460, however your clutch setup will have to be for a 460, and bellhousing will have to be for a 460, or 351M/400. Also you will want to unbolt your I-6 motor mount towers, and put your 460 towers in. It should be fairly easy, you may have to do a little custom work for the exhaust though. I'm not saying that is definetely everything, but everything I can think of at the moment. good luck!

Welcome to the house! Dig around on here a little and you will find tons of threads about this very common engine swap. Not at all a bolt right up deal, but well worth your time and effort. I am finishing up a similar swap (79 f250 4wd 300-6 for a 460 from a 78 f250 2wd). These folks make your job a lot easier Ford Headers, Dodge Headers, Chevy Headers at L&L Products Good luck! Also, you will need motor mount towers because the ones from the 300 and the 2wd will not work. I do have a spare 460 flywheel if you end up needing one.

Well that sounds a lot easier than I haver been told by some other people. I know it won't be a walk in the park but as long as it is worth it and not a complete "custom" job to accomplish it. I think I am going to find this site very helpful through out this overhaul.
