96 f-250 tank switching problems
Hello There
I have a 1996 f-250 4.9 6 cyl. automatic with overdrive.I also have the aux gas tank. When i switch to the main front tank the truck dies.if i use the rear tank it runs fine.the switch still shows the amount of gas in each tank but thats it.Any ideas as what to do would be a big help
thanks

Thanks alot for the best advice i got so far.No one ever thought of just listening to hear the pump in the tank.I hope it works so i do not have to drop the tank,As of now the truck is in the shop getting a new transmission.A broken band caused it to give up the ghost.as soon as i get it back thats the first thing i will do.
by the way i checked out your truck. It is one of the nicest trucks i have .seen.It looks like it means bussiness and not just gaudie looking or a beat up junker.it looks like you have the right combination of looks and guts.

Sometimes, if you dont hear the pump kick in, you can get under there and beat on the tank while someone turns the key on and off, and the pump will start working. But, this is usually temporary if it does work at all. It may save you a towing bill. That is the good thing about dual tanks,... you have a backup.

Sounds like the tank you are switching to has a bad fuel pump in the tank.
The gauge is a separate system and has nothing to do with the running of the pump in either tank.
They do share a common ground and a common switch in the dash and that is it. The sender information does also travel in the same wiring harness and plugs but is electrically separate.
