John Blue, welcome for starters, I've had several exhaust on my 2001 with 5.4. I started with cutting the muffler off and just a straight pipe, then went to cutting the Y pipe and with glass packs dualing staight out under the back bumper, went from that (after tearing them off) to no mufflers duals turned out just ahead of the right back tire. In all honesty that way sounded the best to me, just catalytic converters no mufflers, but whoever was riding in the right rear seat was just left out of any conversation. When I put the new engine in at 210000 miles (hard miles this is a 4x Supercrew and I haven't cut it any slack) I took the cats out and tied back into my tailpipes still in front of the rear tire......need I say it really sounded sucky. I now have (muffler guy still is in shock) no cats, Y pipe to single 3 inch shorty glass pack with single 3 inch pipe behind the rear tire doesn't sound as good as cat with no muffs but the rear seat pass. can now enjoy the conversation. Later Whit Oh somewhere in there I had Flowmasters with it turned out ahead of the tire....just wasn't loud enough for me.

My brother has a 2002 F-250 with the 5.4. He recently installed Gibson's cat-back system and told me he notices a difference in the seat of the pants when he gets on it. He doesn't drive it enough to say much about any increase or decrease in fuel mileage, but he said it definitely feels as though the engine is breathing better now. He got the system which splits into duals which exit under the rear bumper. At idle, it has a really nice rumble and it's not too bad under acceleration either. As LxMan1 mentioned, Magnaflow has some very nice systems on the market, as well. My boss has a 2004 F-250 Crew Cab with the 5.4 and he installed a Flowmaster system. I'm not sure which series muffler he has, but his truck is really noisy. I'm thinking he has the Series-40. Friend of mine with a Dodge 2500 Ram Hemi put a Flowmaster kit on with the Series-50 and his sounds much nicer. Lots of options out there, that's for sure.

Flowmasters are only aluminized as well and only lasted about 4 years on my 01 F150. I went with a stainless Magnaflow after that. I have Magnaflow on my current truck and my 5.0 Mustang.

I'm not sure about the Magnaflow, but when my brother was ordering his Gibson system, the part listed was for the 5.4 and 6.8 trucks. In Gibson's case, the same system is used for both engine combinations. But, again, not sure about Magnaflow's.
