98 Merc Mountaineer front wheel bearings

We are hearing a growl now so I think after 193K the wheel bearings need to be changed.

This is true 4x4 (not AWD).

So any tricks out there besides removal of the calipers and then the locking nut and then removal of the bolts from behind?

nope, thats about it... loosen the axle nut and push the shaft inward an inch. That gets the CV joint away from the hub so you have more clearance to get the 3 bolts out from the back. I have a good qualilty 6 point box end wrench, with no offset. I put in on and smack with a 5 pound hammer to get them loose.
