Good write up Mark. FYI, in 2005 the hood blanket was eliminated. 2004 blankets will fit the 05 - 07's.

well said

well said mark thanks for the info straight to the point with no unnecessary nonsense. I'm pretty knowledgeable on the 6.0s but i was looking for the whole breakdown on the split year nonsence. I've run 7.3 for a very long time know them inside and out however was kinda forced into a 6.0 recently and doing lots and lots aaaaand lots of preliminary work to avoid a 6.0h "no start delivering engine to dumpster" I've worked oh a bunch at my shop but never really took the time to break one completely down and "bullet proof" one the right way. I've got a 2005 6.0 apart

Engine Swap

Thanks for the info. I was wondering . I put an 05 motor in an 04. At first everything seemed ok but it has gotten worse every day. The egr is spotty even after replacing it, the turbo makes a wierd sound like grinding when i let odd sometimes and it will lose powere for a few miles then be normal then lose power again. I did use the harness from the 05 as well. I tried to put the 05 computer in it to but it just caused the truck to surge when i drove it so i put the 04 computer back in. Any suggestions? Pleaseeeeeee

2005-2007 Superduty same fitting. If I remember right, There are some 2005s that might not have the scoop inside for the EGR cooler.

NOTE - original thread updated because of broken (old) links.

Also - I have attached is a snapshot from a Ford Training document. It describes the change in 2004 glow plugs (shorter) and the need to make sure that the earlier 2003 glow plugs are not installed in the 2004+ year models.

I have posted this a few times already, but it is important, and because there is internet material that erroneously describes it the other way around, I felt it should be emphasized.

I will also emphasize that the cast iron HPOP with the troublesome STC fitting came out in 2005. None of the 2004 engines had this pump. All 2004 engines came with the round aluminum HPOP. The 2004 HPOP was upgraded in capacity slightly over the 2003 HPOP due to the increased size/volume of the wavy oil rails that were introduced for the 2004 engine (note that the early 2004 trucks were equipped with the 2003 engine). The 2004.5 HPOP is exactly the same external shape/size/dimensions as the 2003-2004 HPOP.

I think the safest solution for everyone is to say use the newer, shorter plugs.

With the age of these trucks and the potential for heads to have been swapped around, it is a safer course.
