94 Ranger has tranmission problems?

My Ranger just slipped out of reverse today while I was backing out of the driveway, and has been doing it ever since. Is my transmission going? There is also a grinding sound when it's not in any gear, and the clutch is out. This also just started. Any ideas? Thank you - Katt51

I'm afraid that a new clutch and tranny are in order. Mine jumps out of first and 3rd gear is gone, so I'm in the same boat. Your tranny is the M5OD made by Mazda.

the trans can maybe be rebuilt, gotta find a good trans shop to do it. probably need a mainshaft and some gear clusters. The noise is fromt he main shaft and the jumping out of gear from worn shift forks.

Had mine rebuilt 5-6 years ago, about $900, couple of years later OD went out another $5-600. R&Rd the clutch both times another $300 or so. put in autozone parts with lifetime warranty so when I had tans out 2d time got new clutch assembly no questions asked. SO ya just need to figure out how much you want to spend. But if not trashed inside may be the cheaper route is to rebuild. ALso have the shift rail plugs replaced with metal ones, thats how the fluid getout while you drive and burn up the trans.
