If this is allowed for 2009, this must be a change that was incorporated into the new 5-speed auto trans. I would be very interested from a technical standpoint what allows Ford to do this.
If you followed what the manual said then your in the clear when it comes to the damage.. If the manual tell you that's the way you should do it then don't do it any other way.. There must of been something else that caused the problem then...
* Flat-tow capability - Vehicles equipped with the 6F35 can be flat towed (all four wheels on the road) behind other vehicles without damaging the transmission. When flat towed, the transmission is in neutral, but internal parts rotate, causing heat. With the engine turned off during towing, the pump cannot create pressure to move oil around in the transmission and cool parts. To address this, internal baffling was added to the 6F35 to capture and direct oil to key areas.

Thanks, dlburch, that is very interesting. I would have to say, then, that this failure is probably not due to the towing. Even if the baffling Ford added did not work as advertised, it probably would not fail so quickly.
The last auto I know of that had a rear-mounted pump was the GM PowerGlide. It had 2 pumps, one front and one rear. The rear pump was there so you could push-start it.
C4 1967 with a cast iron case was the last Ford auto with a rear and front pump.

It was cast iron. Two pumps, front and rear. Typical Ford three speed auto hooked to a 289 cid V-8. Installed in a Custom 500 two door sedan. ;-) The later versions of this tranny that is better known is aluminum cased and only has one pump in the front on the input shaft.

My bad on the C4. All of the C4 trannys were aluminum cased. I don't why I had it in my head that they were cast iron at first. I do know it was a C4, as I had it rebuilt at a transmission shop back in the day and they told me it was a C4. Go figure.
