ringing turbo noise at idle
What causes the ringing low-speed turbo noise at idle then goes away as rpms increase. 1999 7.3 with 204k miles, superchips performance tow installed?

I haven't checked the turbo for any impeller contact to housing, I just get comments about the noise @ idle, it really rings loud. Is this normal on that year, stock turbo? I checked the turbo back awhile ago and no issue, but only from the intake side and not the exhaust side. I ask the local turbo rebuild shop here, he just told me if theres no contact it's o.k. is this true?

It could be your idle or tensioner pulleys are getting bad... Check them for side movement.

I'd definitely check to see if the wheel is contacting the housing.

FWIW, I don't hear any ringing in my turbo ever. It's probably not in the turbo, unless the wheel is just rubbing on the housing causing a resonance of some kind.

It's just the exhaust wheel spinning.
These turbos spin all the time, even at idle.

Thanks. Now I have to listen more closely to mine.
I really need hearing aids but I am afraid of what more I will hear.

My TDI does the same thing, but in a much smaller way.
Turbo wheel on that is only 42mm.

I can hear mine stopping after I turn off the motor and am getting out of the truck. Must spin pretty good even at idle to spin that long.

I just noticed a loud ringing, but only at high-idle. What should I check?
