DANA 60 codes - What/when was it born under?

Ok Fellas,
Who has their DANA 60 ID book handy?

(I went to DANA's web site, it only goes back to '78. I searched for a chart or such on FTE's transmission/differential/transcase forum, lots of info on FRONT DANA 60s, but didn't find any answers for this....so here I am)

I've got a full-floating DANA 60 under my '65 F250, however, based on some notes from the PO, the rearend MAY have come from a '67 F250/F350.

Here are the codes I took off it today:

-- The casting has the requisite ' 60 ' cast in to the lower RH corner of the case.

-- Cast into the upper RH corner of the case is: ' C-30255 '.

-- I believe I located the Born on Material (BOM) stamping on the RH axle tube. It reads: ' 5 12 7C1 '.

-- Lastly, is the tag at a rear cover bolt (which I'm not too confident to believe, for some odd reason) which reads, ' C7TA-BV 602311-1 4.10 '.

Can anyone help decipher what all these numbers tell us?

At least can we determine what year/model this rearend came out?

Thanks in Advance, Guys!

C7TA-BV = 1967 F250 Dana 60 / 4.10-1 / non Limited Slip / Ring gear has 29 splines (1965: 10 splines).

5 12 7C1 / Assembled May 12, 1967 / C1 is the code for the assembly plant.

The fact that the rear axle ID tag is still there...is somewhat amazing, as most are missing by now.

There are two possible reasons why:

1) The axle has never been apart.

2) Whoever worked on it...remembered to put the tag back on.

All 1961/67 F350's used Dana 70's. 1953/67 F350's have 6 lug wheels on a 7.25" bolt circle.

Hey Bill,

Thanks for coming to my rescue!

So it appears that the tab may be correct since it sorta matches the assembly date...... Cool.
Now I know what I've got & get the parts accordingly.

Have a GREAT day!

P.S.
Do you know what all, if anything, was different between the DANA 60s with the various GVW packages, or was it just different brakes and different "leaf spring packages"? This DANA 60 has the 12" x 2.5" brake shoes.......

I added more info inre to F350's.

The GVW had nothing to do with the rear axle, just the springs, possibly the shocks would be different.

I wonder when the rear axle was changed if the rear brakes were also changed.

1953/65 F250's had 12 1/8" x 2" brakes front/rear.

1966 was the first year 12" x 2 1/2" front/rear brakes were also available.

As original, the front/rear brakes would be the same size.

But that may not be the case now...if the brakes are from 1967 and are 12 x 2 1/2.

So in other words, it appears as though when the rear axle was replaced with a '67 axle, they left the '67 (12" x 2 1/2") brakes on it?

(If that's the case, that's a good thing as it give me more brake shoe surface area than the '65 brakes would have had.... )

The front axle brakes ARE 12 1/8" x 2"....

Thanks again for your help, Bill !

It could have 12 x 2 1/2" brakes, it could have 12 1/8" x 2. The point was that after 1965, both sized were available.

The thing with the 12 x 2 1/2" brakes (if you now have them) is...they're at the rear.

60% of the braking is done with the front brakes.

Agreed. If I could wiggle my nose and make the larger brakes on the front, rather than the back, it would be a better deal.

I just ordered new shoes; front & back. DANG! They don't give those away either!
The shoe pads are riveted onto the steel instead of bonded; I'd prefer bonded since I'd likely get more miles out of them.
But, "Ya gotta play with the cards you're dealt."

Back then, Ford only sold riveted brake shoes or lining, you wanna know why?

Because...when the shoes wore down, the rivets would cut grooves into the brake drums!

Ford like all the other automakers back then...and today, is really in the partsbiz.

Over 75% of the profits come from parts sales, not vehicle sales.

The markup on what Ford paid for the parts from suppliers as opposed to what the dealers paid Ford for parts..was/is close to 80 PER CENT!

If parts don't wear out, no profits for automakers.

Say Bill,

You mentioned that the ring gear has 29 splines
You were referring to the pinion gear-to-yoke spline count, correct?

Welcome to FTE

Dana 60's from 1972: The 2" x 1/2" Dana ID tag is bolted onto the housing using two bolts...just to the left (rear axle), to the right (front axle) of the inspection cover.

The code is composed of 7 or 8 numbers, like these examples: 603010-1 or 603010-11.

The Ford ID tag was located under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover to the housing. Many of these are now missing.

A '65 F250 Camper Special was typically originally equipped with a DANA 60 rearend (your door tag information should confirm if it was or not) and all '65 F250s were fitted with brake shoes that measured 12 1/8" x 2".

What specifically emergency brake part numbers are you searching for?
Do you need ALL of the emergency brake hardware & cable part numbers - from the under the dash handle all the way to the rear drums or just some of the parts?
