I just want to understand one thing. You are talking about using a "gas" tank for "diesel", right? I'm sure it is ok if tanks are new or cleaned properly. Do the "diesel" tank sending unit and float fit the "gas" tanks? I understand I'll need to modify things and I'm ok w/ that. Do I reuse my original parts, get new ones w/ a new tank, get all the used parts w/ a used tank, or have to purchase them seperatly?
The tanks and sending units are the same for gas or diesel. If you buy a new tank you won't have any issues.

You can re-use your original sending unit and filler neck with the 38 gallon tank, but you'll need to extend the sending unit float a bit for it to reach the bottom of the tank.
I'd definately buy a new tank (less than $200). If your sending unit works I'd reuse it but you could buy new if you wanted to. I'd stay away from used tanks cause they might be full of sludge and who knows what else... probably rusty too.

Thanks for clearing that up. It appears the 1980-1984 (f26c) and 1985-1986 (f26d) tanks are one price and the 1987-1989 (f26e) are another price. Does it have something to do w/ fuel injection? Do the older tanks not have the vent tubing, roll over valve, or extra tube in the fill? Anybody? Thanks again.

You want a 87-89 tank. The earlier tanks have different sending unit sizes and won't work with our trucks.

Thanks again. I'll be doing this real soon. Used to work @ an Auto Body shop, so it looks like I'll be stopping in to see my old boss again to see what prices he can get it for locally first. Looks like Wikio.com has the best price so far @$193 but I'll keep looking. Any ideas on the front tank? Still want a larger front tank too. Summer trips w/ 30' travel trailer. Would be nice to not have to fill up as often. Don't want to lose bed space unless I have to. Thanks again.

MustangMatt,
How did your project end up?

I now have a nice little puddle of #2 on my Garage floor.

...And I've given away 2 stock 19 gallon tanks I had sitting around for years.

Did you use the 38 gallon?
If not, still have it, for sale?

If you did use it, how did it fit overall? Pics?

I've been working with a rather well known poly tank manufacturer to get those made from poly and I need a tank for them to make a mold from. But I want to know how that 38 fits overall before we dive into production.

Thanks.

WEll Jim, Mine is still sitting in the box it came in... Because of my class 5 hitch the 38 gallon tank will not fit...

Its the same width as the stock 19 gallon tank, just drops down twice as far. Turns out my class 5 hitch bolts to the frame rails and then moves inward, unlike most that moves outward.

So if the tank were litterally 2-3 inches less wide, it would have slid in like nothing was ever a problem... I thought about taking the hammer to it, but then decided against it.

Right now I have been driving around on the front tank for about 3 months with just dead space in the rear... Im willing to sell the rear tank, but shipping will probably be attroshios.

I have not bought a new tank yet, because being a poor college kid, I have a back up fund for when the truck breaks down, but right now it is perfectly drivable, it gets me to and from school, just smokes alot more than most that I have seen, and occasionally runs rough at idle. And I dont see a need to get a new tank at this moment when I am only making 125 bucks every TWO weeks, most of which is going towards fuel. But this tank im right on the half way mark and almost have 210 miles on the tank... thats the BEST i have ever gotten... I would be happy for 15 MPG... lol

Let me know if you have any ideas, and if you would like the tank, Im sure we can figure something out.
