My '96 PSD get's 21mpg with the cruise set at 72 with 5 people and luggage going on vacation. 355's 5 speed with a few mods. The '90 has a '93 7.3 non turbo 4.10's and get's 14-15. The '89 4.10's 5 speed has got 17 tops on hwy while the '83 F-350 utility cab 6.9 4speed is not so pretty. Except for the wife's suburban, I won't own a gas truck if I can help it!

 

The 86 E-350 I used to have with a 6.9, C-6, and 3.55's got 13 to 14 didn't matter city or highway. but it always carried about 1800 pounds of equipment. This was after the ladder rack was installed, before that it got 15 to 16. It was still running strong at 683,000 miles when it spun a main bearing. The only things that were done to it were 2 injection pumps, 1 supply pump,1 water pump, and 1 vacuum pump.

 

My '90 F250 7.3IDI (w/ATS turbo) gets about 10-12 hauling 2200+ pounds of gear and cabover camper. My previous 460 used to get around 6 (although the camper was a bit bigger).

I was considering trading up (she now has a salvage certificate after a recent accident), and test-drove a couple of 7.3PSDs. I haven't driven a non-turbo IDI, but I can tell you that my IDI certainly feels peppier than either of the newer PSDs I tried....

Please let me know if you don't keep it. I'm sorry for your loss and hope more importantly no one was hurt. I have my parted out '85 6.9 in the building. It really surprised me what the Ins. co. offered me for it. I had pulled out all receipts and stuff and then bought her back for $400.00

 

Here's a little more of the story here. I was happily surprised by my insurance payout too - the camper was damaged as well, but most of the damage was superficial. I think my residual to keep the truck (and camper) was about $900, well worth it... I had a completely unrelated mechanical problem shortly afterwards (bad fuel pump), hence my test-driving of newer trucks. I was really not too impressed at what I would get for my money on a newer truck, so I think "Betty" is a keeper...

Lack of power? Not really. Mine flys down the interstate at 70 towing 7000 lbs. Would I like a turbo? Yes, but I'm happy with it now.
I get 13-18 depending how the truck is feeling. Some days it just sucks fuel like its free. My front brakes are dragging, I need to get them replaced.

 

I have a 94 F350 ext. cab 7.3 PSD 5spd. I'm getting around 20Mpg overall. Plus she's got 315K on her and purrs like a kitten .

 

I'm damn proud of my non turbo IDI's!

I hate turbos with a passion! The whistling sound gets on my nerves like you wouldn't believe!


And my 6.9L C6, 3.54 12,000 lbs motorhome gets 12-14mpg driving at 55mph!



Nope, sure ain't a speed demon, but never left me on the side of the road! No silly electronics to go bad on me far away from home, no turbo to blow seals and have a run-away, no problems!



Plus, maintenance on an IDI as just as cheap (if not cheaper) than on a typical gas job!



I don't care about power, I care about reliability, and that's what IDI's are! Very reliable pigs

I get 19 mpg, drive it to and from work in Dallas traffic. Haven't ever checked highway vs. city mileage, just figure it by the fill up.

look up what IDI stands for... then edit your post........

 

Look up the basics of a diesel engine and you will find that on every diesel engine that the injector delivers fuel directly into the top of the combustion chamber! (That means direct fuel injection) That my friend is why fuel injection pressures are so high on a diesel fuel injection system! Do you know how a diesel fires??? God please say the glow plugs so I can embarrass you again!!!! The diesel combusts at the very instant that atomized fuel inters the combustion chamber due to the heat of compression.... And please tell me what "IDI" stands for????

Its called a pre-combustion chamber and IDIs(in-direct injection) have a lot lower fuel pressure than a direct injection.
