backfire on start?

lately has not been starting on the first try in the morning. i'll turn it over for 3-5 seconds a couple times before it fires up. once it gets going, things seem normal.

here's the strange part...

sometimes while turning it over and sometimes between attempts, i'll hear a pop almost like a backfire.

it had never done this until four days ago and has done it every morning since then. afternoon starts are fine. gonna plug it in tonight just for fun.

have any of you ever experienced this?

thanks,
eric

Its just the fuel vapor igniting once the GP gets hot enough. I have it happen often if I don't let the GP's warm enough then let it set with key on to let the GP's warm up.

Having no fire and putting a bit of fuel in the cylinder. Once it lights off, there will be a good puff of exhaust when all that fuel burns up.

I knew a guy with an really old diesel boat that would blow beautiful smoke rings until it warmed up.

Mine will do it if it is cold outside and I have to crank for five seconds before it starts. Once it starts there is no smoke. I always wondered what caused the rings. We have had a couple tractors in the past due the same thing.
