Hey guys, I have an enclosed car trailer, and Id like to get a generator for it. Mostly it would be for lights, and stuff like that. I dont want to get one that in a year be like damn I should have got a bigger one. I saw one at Home Depot for 649. and it was a 5000 watt. homelite. Suburu motor. What do you guys use, and recomend? Thanks!
Another time bigger is better. I bought a Generac 7500w/13500 surge 4 years ago. It has run my whole house quite a few times. Electric start/low oil shutoff even will run my 220v welder. I bought it Tractor supply. You can pick up some real deals on used ones. People buy them and use one time then sell if not using, kind of like snow blowers. Honda's are good but a little pricy.
3000 watts will probably do what you want. If you need to run a small mig welder in as well, you might want to go with 5000 watt. I don't know if I'd go with homelite or one of those low end ones. Sometimes they can be problematic. My buddy has a Honda and I've got a Yamaha. Both are very quiet - but those are for RVing in campgrounds, so quiet is important. Quiet is also pricy, so if you don't care about the noise then just look at watts and reliability. Good luck
Yes I would need quiet. In case I would run it around my house. What do the Yamahas or hondas run? Would you buy one used?
Keep in mind this is in Canadian bucks, but I paid just shy of 1800 for my Yamaha. But it runs at 48 decibels, about the same as a car idling. Very quiet...I like it
i have a honda 3000 love it ele start. the old man has a yamaha 2800. you might look on craigslist.com you might find one used that's how i got mine $700. used just took her camping past weekend ran all night like a champ (powerd two trailers all night due to the cold weather bbbrrrr)
Brand name is key. People awlays bring cheap brands to my dad's shop and its nearly impossable to get parts, plus they break down much more often then the brands like Yamaha or Honda.

Honda engines will last forever, but are very expensive. You can get a very nice Briggs 5500W generator from Lowes for about $550-600. They run very well. Most generators are very loud though, you don't want to stand next to them for a long time. There are newer ones that are specifically sold as "quiet" models... they are very very pricy, but if you are working next to it all day, probably well worth the added price.
Also remember that the larger capacity models cost a lot more to run in terms of fuel per hour.

Honda EU 3000, or if you don't have or want A/C get the EU 2000. If you buy the 2000 you can always buy another and run them in parallel for enough power to run your A/C. The difference in weight is about 100lbs on these models if that is a factor for you like it is me.
If you will need 220/240 do some more research.

You don't say what you want the gennie for. If it's to work with any construction type will work. If you're going camping or RVing, please get a quite Honda or yamaha. Those guys running construction gennies in the campground have me cleaning the gun and wondering how long life in prison really is and would it be worth it. The Honda 2000i is around $1000. You can find them at the Rv shows for a bit less (900). If you want to run the air conditioner you will need two, plus an in series wiring kit for a $100 or so. They also have a battery charging kit tor a few bucks. That's the setup I have. I only carry 1 in winter or up to high elevations, and 2 in the summer. They weigh about 35 lbs or so and are compact and easy to handle. Quite enough to meet national park standards, whatever that is. Like someone above said thy run like a car at idle. And, yes i would buy one used from someone who acted like they take care of stuff.

I am one of those guys running a construction gen. for power...............Not every working guy can afford to drop a big chunk a change on a damn honda, I go to great pains to keep mine as quiet as possible and running as little as possible. I run mine in the gen. compartment of my class C that used to house the too expensive to repair honda gen., with sound deadning insulation and a 12v fan helping to move air into the compartment. I fabed up a long tailpipe out of hyd. tubing and aimed it similarly to the old gen. set-up......Dont lump all of us construction gen. guys into the same class.

I have an 8000 watt that is pretty loud. I've thought about rigging up some kind of sound deadening but am concerned about engine damage from an increase if back pressure or heat or ??? whatever might come into play with a bit more tube, muffler ect.
I have not gotten serious enough to attempt anything. Has anyone tried to quiet down a larger gen? Would it be a problem for a 10 hp engine to add an additional muffler, something that would clamp on when needed?
We need some viable ideas that won't cause damage to an engine!
Also, you CAN NOT RUN TWO GENERATORS TOGETHER!! Not on the same circuit. So get one that can do the largest appliance you need to power... if you need a second, you have to run it seperately.
