Mounting a 5.4 in my '66....need help
#2
There is no conversion kit to install a MOD motor into these old tucks.
I installed a 4.6L in my 65 last summer and I made my own mounts. I used the 4R70W transmission and it uses the same transmission mount as my C6 and previous T-18 4 speed did so it bolted right on and all I had to do was make the motor mounts. The 4.6L was a very tight fit as the left hand exhaust manifold just clears my big power steering gear box. I also could not run A/C as the compressor would hit the cross member on the right hand side so I installed the A/C eliminator from the Ford SVO catalog so that I could still use the factory belt. Other wise there is good clearance between the engine and firewall and on the right hand side of the engine.
I think the block on the 5.4L might be a little taller to accomidate the additional stroke compared to the 4.6L and if that is the case it might be even tighter yet on the left hand side. If you are running manual steering then you would have extra room yet as the gear box is quite a bit smaller compared to the power steering unit.
I hope the 5.4L fits good in your pickup, you will love having the MOD motor. Installing the 4.6L has been the best up-grade yet to my pickup and I love how it runs. As always I wish I had a 5.4L or even the 6.8L but there is a lot of things I can do to a 4.6L to get more power out of it. I have a complete write up on this forum from last year that outlines the majority of things that I had to do in order to get the pickup running. Below is the link if you wish to view it. Good luck with your swap and keep us posted as you progress with it.
