Really stupid question-how do I tell which gears I have??

For the change you are asking about... the value is NOT there. On a 4x4 vehicle, you have to swap out both axles. These days with labor rates the way it is, a competent shop will get you for probably $2500. A gear change should really only be considered for more radical changes in tires or truck duty. You could always move out the 20"s for some 18" deals.

agree with the guys above. If you are gonna fork over the money for new gears, go 4.56 or nothing IMO....maybe 4.30 for a 4x2 (can't find 4.30 for front axle for the 4x4)
usually the wieght is pretty similar from 18" to 20"
but there are some cases where the 17/18" rims are alot lighter than the 20" rims. Sometimes as much as 15-30 lbs per rim/tire combo...which is pretty significant in rolling mass when you add up all 4
