Differences Between E7 and E8 Heads

Ive got an 89 F-250 with a 460 and its either got a bad head gasket or bad head. Im not positive but I think its got the fuelie E7 heads. Ive got a set of E8 heads which I believe were some sort of motor home specific heads. If one of the E7 heads are bad can I use an E8 head in its place?

are you sure it is an E8 not a F3 head?

the F3 and E7 should be identical heads.

if it is a E8 head and is from a 88 motorhome, it might be a carb head as some motorhomes still used carbs for a couple of years after the trucks went to efi. if so then it will not interchange with the fuelie heads as the ports are different.

Ya they are E8 stamped on the lifter valley side of the head. I did some research once before to find what they were but couldnt remember where I found the info. The motor did have a carb on it before I tore it down. So I suppose they are not interchangeable for that 89 truck.

if they came off a carb'd engine then they will definetely not interchange with the fuelie heads. need to find a fuelie head.

I have an 88 model M/H which has a 87 model 460 engine & trans, but the heads were E6TE's making them 86 models.

Yours being E8's & knowing for sure they are carbed heads but you need EFI heads, might be you could go to 460.com & see if anybody over there has an EFI set of heads & might want to trade.
Normaly though, those guys are looking the D3 heads because of not having the air hole in the port & a little easier to port, but still, might be somebody wanting to get rid of a fuelie set.

E6TE and the motorhome carb specific E8TE castings are the early style non EFI castings. They are later D3's.

Partially...

I am getting a bunch of client chatter about my name on this board so I felt it a good idea to check it out...

Learning Heads

Hi. I'm learning Heads and engines. I believe I destroyed my #5 piston on my 400 in my 79scab 4x4.

I have a 79 E series 460 in storage with what I believe to be under 100k miles Based on plug wires, vac hoses and emission lines/ hoses still being date coded to 79. So I'm learning about heads and you guys talk about different date coded on the heads. Question,..."Where are the date codes on the heads"? I know the block code is above the starter but no clue on the heads.

Thanks for the help, Chris
