I WANT TO BUY A LIGHTNING.....A FEW QUESTIONS THOUGH
I just recently purchased a 95 Lightning with 40,000 miles on it,the question I have is if the 351 motor in the truck is a roller motor like the 302 in late model Mustangs. Also if anyone knows what cam profile the Lightning comes with? Thank you, Chet.

The Lightning has a roller block if the first 4 digits of the casting number (located just above the starter motor) are F4TE. All the '95s, almost all '94s, and about half of the '93s are roller-blocked, but they all use the same flat tappet cam.
The stock cam specs are:
Flat tappet
Advertised duration: 260º intake, 274º exhaust
Duration @ .050: 200º intake, 214º exhaust
Gross Lift: .260" intake, .278" exhaust
Net lift w/1.6 RR: .416" intake, .445" exhaust
Net lift w/1.7 RR: .442" intake, .472" exhaust
(No information on lobe centers, overlap, or valve events.)

I would like to thank Jeff for his response to what type cam came with my 95 Lightning. Now for the big question? What modifications would you recomend if I would like to keep the speed density setup. I heard that a cam change can't be done because the computer can't figure out the change with speed density. Is this true?I was thinking about Air Flow Research heads and porting the lower intake and maybe a small shot of juice. Please let me know if anyone has any good ideas for which direction I should go. Thanks MCK.

The problem with Ford's speed density, as compared to the performance systems like the DFI or SEFI8LO is that it uses a frequency signal rather than a voltage to read manifold pressure. I don't have a clue why Ford chose this method, but they did. The problem is that with a decent cam the intake pressure starts to oscillate like mad (giving that nice lumpy idle everyone with high octane blood loves so much) and this drives the frequency sensor (the MAP) batty and the computer can't interpret the signal.
There's a decent cam - The Crane Compucam 2030 - Lightning cam (I think that's the right designation) that'll do well. Decent flowing heads are a good idea too since that won't change manifold pressure at idle or cruise much. You will want to get a chip burned, though, since the speed density setup has no idea that you have extra air coming into the engine under full throttle and therefore won't supply any extra fuel.

I WANT TO BUY A LIGHTNING.....A FEW QUESTIONS THOUGH
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-01 AT 11:52 AM (EST)]Hey! I found Jeff and Gloria away from home. I just ran across this site. Looks pretty cool. Maybe we can help out with some info over here. That and this site has a forum I can discuss stuff about my '54 F100, too!
