What are people getting for gas mileage with their 302. Im looking for a 92-96 f150 and trying to decide between the 302 and the 4.9

Any sugestions.

I cant speak for the 5.0 (I am building one now for my 5.0) but I will tell you 4.9 mileage is not good, especially around town. I cant believe 5.0 is any worse.

They usually get around the same mileage from what I've seen. That would be around 14-16mpg. That's ignoring the claims of 22mpg I've seen from some posts on here.

Depends on the transmission and rear gear, too.

Im just making sure I consider all my options, I love a strong straight six but you cant beat a V8 for certin applications. And I like the idea of being able to add performance mods down the road if I decide to. Dosnt seem like there are many options in the 300 EFI world.

How about longevity, I knw that the 300s claim to fame is lasting forever, will one get the same from the 302?

Im getting around 11 right now (in town). Will get around 13 on the highway. But mine also needs some carb work. Once everything gets tuned appropriatly i should be getting around 15.

The 300 and 302 get nearly the same gas mileage. Don't ya wish you could just have 2 trucks with both engines? And a 3rd one with a 460?

my 4.9 5 speed with a tonneau cover got as high as 20 cruising in 5th gear but typically got about 17-18, about the same as the 302.

I know the 302's last very well. I just had to rebuild mine and as far as I can tell I was doing it for the first time since the truck left the line in 1970. I think I was getting somewhere around 10-15 when I first got the truck, put some headers on it and got a bit better, but now I have a mild cam in it so I expect to maybe get around what I used to get.

around here the farmers buy old 300's out of busted up junked trucks and put them on stands in the fields to run CONSTANTLY during cotton season... mine should have blown up a long time ago and *since the speedo's wrong and didn't work at all for a few years, i'll be conservative* 200,000+ later it's still getting me around. exhaust pipe rusted in 2 and it sounds like i put a fart can on it, but she still drives when i need her and pulls anything i've a mind to put behind her. it's got that old style manual 3 spd with a compound *granny* gear which helps with that.

have one of each and they both get between 10 and 12. the 85 300 is on the lower end of the scale but it's had very minimal work and old and beat to hell. the 302 is only a year old on a fresh rebuild in an 83 block, finally got the carb tuned almost perfect and running a mild cam that switches the firing order to the 351 order and she's getting 12+ mpg if i drive nice. this is in front of a c6 and i haven't even got to the rear yet. i will say that neither of them have the power III want, which is why i'm taking my old 79 302 block and gonna build a 347 out of it.

I've got a 1971 ford f100 with a 302/4spd and a 1988 jeep Comanche with a 242 (4.0L)/auto.

The ford gets better milage, especially when i hot rod it around town. I know my school is 4 miles away, and i hot rod it there and back, and in 4 days, theres a 1/4 tank. That would be 3/4 to a full tank in my jeep.

MY 1979 302 has a 2bbl carb and it gets great gas mileage for a full size truck of it's time ... Obviously it has a lot to do with how you drive it ... Since I got rid of my muffler and did a straight pipe I tend to drive it a little harder because it sounds nice , as far as longevity my original 79 302 had about 500,000 on it when I lost a main bearing... I would have rebuilt but it was my only transportation at the time so I opted for a swap and put an 86 302 in it as a quick fix ... But I love my 302 and the 2bbl motorcraft carb is fine as long as your not driving it on the racetrack...

P.S EVERYONE.... This past year I am burning two tanks of gas reg vs mid grade .... It's something with the reg gas ... I have been running mid grade and it lasts a lot longer ... Haven't done milage check but driving the same places each week and normally I use about a tank a week all of a sudden I was using 2 a week ??? My uncle suggested I use midgrade I said I couldn't afford it he said double the price of reg when at the pump and compare if your using twice as much that will make it easier to decide .....
$3.75 x 2= $7.50 vs $4.00 x = $4.00......that helps my cheap *** at the pump

The octane level in the gas should have no effect on mileage, it uses the same amount of fuel to match the airflow.
