I just got a ball park quote from a local diesel mechanic of $4000 to rebuild my '89 non powerstroke truck. Does this seem reasonable? I like the 17 mpg I get , I just don't like the 6 qts. of oil every 60 miles. I've never had any dealings with these engines before so not sure if I should rebuild or replace. I've tried a new CDR valve and mechanic in the jar with no help. Can anyone suggest an Oregon (south/centeral/east) place for me to check?

Good running used IDI 7.3's are very cheap right now. The trick is being sure it is a good one.
If your mechanic did not break his quote down, ask him how much to remove and replace the engine. I'm guessing $700-1,000.
I went to an industrial auction at Longview, WA last month and saw a nice 1995 F250 reg. cab 4WD that ran great go for $600.00. No body damage, good interior. And that was a Powerstroke! A 1992 F250 4WD 7.3 IDI with a beat-up body and interior, OK runner, went for $400.

$1000.00 to R&R, don't really want a powerstroke and then have to deal with adapting everything, I'm happy with the IDI so I guess I'm still looking at $3000 in labor and parts or find a used one and hope I don't have to rebuild it too.
