Is there a way to check the CDR for proper operation?

Not 100% certain but I think it only allows airflow one direction.
Though it could just be a oil separator, But I seem to remember someone say they have rubber in them, if so it's more likely it only allows airflow one way.
I may be two hundred miles off though, cause I just don't know for sure!
I think its suposed to shut when you load the engine and keep it from sucking oil into the intake.

i would say search the forum for that, i know you let it soak in gas to clean it and then you blow air through it, if the diaphram closes and does not let ait through is is supposed to be good, but i believe dave has said no compressed air, it will blow it out.

found this in an old post, dont know how to copy w/quote so this is the best i can do
Once you have it cleaned out and dry, put the palm of you hand over the inlet (from the valley pan end) and suck down the outlet side. The only thing that can go wrong is that the diaphram is ruptured. If you can create a vaccum in the can, it means the diaphram is good. If it is ruptured it will allow air in past the diaphram through the little vent hole on the back.

must be nice to actually find parts like that, you call a stealership around here and you get a "what? i've never heard of that!, or We cant get parts for those old diesels, nobody carries their parts anymore."

Dont use compressed air, it could rupture the diaphragm.
