having trouble connecting my c6 to the 460

I have a 71 460 with a c6 auto tranny. I'm getting ready to install it onto the old 48 F1 truck, but have had trouble getting the torque converter connected to the flywheel. After pulling it apart and reseating the torque converter to the transmission, I pushed the tranny close to the fly wheel and slowly truned the crank by hand until I had all four torque converter nuts slightly threaded on I next snuged the housing in closer, and continued tightening the lug nuts to the fly wheel. When all the nuts were on as tight as I could wrench them with my 1/2 inch drive. I tightened the housing to 25 footpounds. I then tried to rotate the crank, but it won't turn. This has happened twice now. Any ideas?

Hey Steve, is there a plate between the engine and tranny for that 460?
I put my 429 to a c6 and needed a plate between them used for clearence for
the pumpkin and starter gears. Just wondering if you needed one also for
that setup.

Retro it has the metal gasget/plate that goes between the bell housing and the back of the engine. It also has a metal o ring that works as one big washer on the tranny side of the flywheel, where the flywheel bolts to the crankshaft. Not sure what I'm doing wrong!

torque converetor bolts

Hey Stevo ck the diameter of the pilot hole in the crank and the diameter of the pilot on the end of the torque converter during those years they used 2 different sizes. That's what it sounds like to me. Good Luck, Chuck

Chuck thats been a thought all along. They converter wouldn't slide in there, it seemed like it needed to be press fit in. Should you be able to push it in or does it tkae sequentialy bolting it in to get it to press fit together?

Ya not a press fit torque converter. Did that torque converter come with that motor originally? If not than you need an FE torque converter. The FEs have a shorter fatter snout.

O.K got new torque conver with smaller snout which fits, now the next question is what transmission fluid to run in there? Got Castrl Mercon V but read the fine print on back and it says not for use in vehicles using mercon SP or type F! Fortunately I haven't used any yet, so what would you guys recogmend? One guy at the shop said Mobil 1 synthetic, but the site has a little asterix saying not for older ford trannies! Mind you this is a 71 licoln c6 but was recently rebuilt within the last year, and is just now getting installed! Help?

fluid

Hey stevo glad to see your getting it going that trans will take regular type f trans fluid. You could go with something fancy but for basic street use regular ole type f will work fine. Most important is the servicing of the trans fluid. Chuck

if it was recently rebuilt as you say then you can use about any atf you want... the reason all the tranny fluids say not compatible with type f is that type f clutches are made of a different material than other clutches and the newer fluids will make the trans slip too much and wear out the clutches quickly. once you replace the clutches with dextron compatible ones you can run whatever

I was wondering about that. I figured I'd hold off until the tranny shop opens tomorrow and ask them to confirm it's safe!

Heres some food for thought, maybe so then maybe not but anyways.

Say the torque converter nose was to big to go in far as it was suppose to into the crank & while you were tighting those nuts, it pulled the flywheel up to the converter & sort of cup shaped it.
It may or it may not have done anything to the flywheel & I guess it would realy depend on how much it cupped the flywheel out of shape once the converter nuts were tight, if a problem would be seen later on.

Think about the job that flywheel has to do & you will understand what I'm saying. More importantly if its a regular standard flywheel & not one of the heavy duty type's.
Maybe I'm just over thinking it, but is something to think about.

The trans shop, they should know about the converter centers, which one would fit in what years of 460 cranks.
That hole in the end of the crank, for the converter nose, is something I would never of thought of untill it was to late, but thanks to Paul Kane telling me, now I know.

Tranny conclusion. The new torque converter fits perfectly into the pilot bearing. Problem solved. Second as some have stated above, since the transmission in newly rebuilt the clutches are made out of non aspestos material and there fore will work withmercon or synthetics, So the shop recogmended Mobil1 atf. Got it all together today ready to install next days off! Getting close now. Thanks everyone for your help.
