Weight of an F6 and F8 frame?

Ok, here's a question that will probably not get answered, lol. How much does an F6 and/or F8 frame weigh? I mean without engine, trans, axles, etc... I'm looking at building a smaller frame rotisserie and want to design it strong enough to hold the weight of one of these double stacked beasts... just in case.

Well, I think you're right -- you won't get an answer! I can't remember ever seeing the bare weight of an F-1 frame posted. I'll put up 600 lbs as my guess, tho.

I cut my C-700 frame down to 20ft, stripped it and had it powder coated. Four men were not able to even move it so I would guess at about 1/2 ton or more. Never thought of weighing it.

I would think you could get close enough to design something safe Scott!

Lets do some math (oh I know it's saturday but give it a shot)!

The F6 Conventional Frame with Cowl, and big tires, had a curb weight of 4275# for the 134" WB; 4345 for the 158" WB; and; 4425 for the 176 WB. This includes the weight of the cowl. I know that front clip weighs less than 100 pounds because I picked mine up one day and moved it on my back. Windshiled may weigh 25 pounds; cowl 50 pounds. The 239 had a 23 qt capacity or 5.75 gallons at 8 lb/gal for 41 pounds. Gas at 20 gallons and 7.5 pounds per gallon is 150 pounds. The 239 engine equiped and ready to go weighed 570 pounds. Lets give the tranny 100 pounds and the radiator another 20 pounds. The single speed rear end specs at 145 pounds dry with 3 pints of fluid (insig.) Drive shaft 30 pounds.

So, the frame alone on an F6 would weigh about 3195 pounds (not including 60 years of Fordomite) minus the weight of the wheels and tires (which we can generously say weigh 500 pounds total)for a max weight rating of 2695. Add a safety factor of 1.25 for "proof" weight and you need to design your carrier to handle an F6 frame to carry 3370 pounds max.

Whew!

Ok F8 Chassis with cowl and windshield curb weight, 337 V8 and with big tires was 6115#/135" WB; 6165#/147" WB; 6305#/159" WB; 6405#/178" WB;and 6465 #/195"WB. The weight of the Rouge 337 V8 was 850#. Subtract an additional 100 pounds for F8 fluids and another 100 pounds for larger front sheetmetal. Plus an additional 200 pounds for wheels and tires, and the max F8 frame weight at 195 inches would be 4085 and at a safety factor of 1.25 for 5100. So for both about 5200 pounds capacity worst case with a safety margin of 1.25.

Check my math, I can't balance the check book!

I needed a frostie after that one, lol. Thanks Julie! I have no doubt it's heavy. At least twice as heavy as a regular F1 frame. Seems a regular car rotisserie isn't even enough. Perhaps I'll go ahead with my F1 frame rot. and worry about making a different one for the big trucks down the line, when that time comes.

I think you could very easily make a close estimate of the weight of the frame along by taking the overall length of the frame, guestimating the width and thickness of the rails and cross members, figuring out the cubic inch and multiplying that by the weight of a cubic foot of steel. Wheel I worked as a band saw operator I could calculate the weight of a piece of steel I needed to move just by the size of the piece because at the time I new the per foot weight. It's been 20 years and I no longer remember any of the weights.

Wow, Bob, I'm a bandsaw operator myself. That's how I'm getting the steel to make a rotisserie due to cleaning up our excess inventory (for LEAN). Which is why I'm hoping to get all the facts and figures now. Only problem is, I don't have the F6 and F8 frames to measure.

Havi,

By looking at the following diagrams you should be able to do a close guesstimate of the length and width of the F-6 frame. As for the height the diagrams don't help but maybe you could scale the picture and get a rough idea. Or someone with a F-6-8 could let you know.

Sorry I can't help more.
