Lightbulb M5OD anygood behind a 351w?

Hey all, i have a 86 F150 Ext cab with 8ft bed.

Ok i have transmission Questions, I know someone selling a good M5OD outta a wrecked 92 F150 and was thinking bout using that on a 351w build.

Second i have a AOD outta a 88 cougar i think, i got it for free and was told it wouldn't shift outta first gear, i figure just needs a rebuild.

Curently i have a SROD behind my 300 I6 and i think it's needs a rebuild soon but it's ok and working. Just the Synchros going and i need to double clutch it to down shift to 2nd at times lol.

Which of these would be best to use or what transmission should i look for if none of these are a good choice. I'm hoping i can just use the srod for time being then upgrade the trans later if the m5od or aod ain't a good choice.

Two other questions on the fact of the aod and m5od swap.

first the AOD i know i'll have to change the drive shaft and buy the shifter colum and linkage/mounts and rebuild kit and hope the trans and tourqe converter works after that. The junkyard engine came with the flexplate so i'm good there. Seems like more crap to do.

second the M5OD, i like manuals more but hate my srod lol, so with the m5od does anyone know do i have to change my driveshaft or tranny mount or the clutch disc and setup of my slave? I know i need to buy new flywheel for the 351 but reading up i've found theres 11 and 10 inch clutches. So i'm lost here! i'm guessing the flywheel stays the same size but the clutches are different. What can i do help me people lol i'm going insane

Thanks for all ya'lls help

Enough of my

The AOD may be electronically controlled.

The M5OD is a decent tranny. If you were to use it I just wouldn't be too hard on it. I used to pull 10k with my M5OD/302 in my 95 F-150. You might want to try and find a small block ZF if you have plans for heavy towing or other forms of abuse.

I assume your truck is 2wd since you talk of a using a car transmission. The M5OD has a slip yoke output, if your SROD has a fixed yoke than DS mods will definitely be required. Since you are swapping from a 6 to an 8 as well, I'm not sure if that will factor into the required length.

Flywheels are the same, clutch was too. At least it was when I did a ZF swap in my 300 six bronco.

I figure 10k was quite a bit for a small block 1/2 ton truck, but it performed well. Not knowing what your intentions are with your truck, and seeing that you have a larger motor. Pulling heavy loads would put more of a strain on that transmission. I guess I'm saying that for everyday running around and the occasional tow job, the M5OD will serve you well. Just dont go trying to out tow someone else with a 1 ton truck or making any trips down the 1/4 mile. Also make sure to replace the plugs on top of that tranny since they tend to leak causing premature failure. They only leak while driving so you aren't likely to see a spot under your truck.

ya i read about that leak problem on them, so probably a DS mod would be required, ok, i'd have to do that with the AOD to. What about the whole internal salve cylinder on the m50d, right now my srod has it on the outside and am wondering if i have to buy a new master and slave cylinder sense there one unit? I'm hoping theres a way to hook mine up lol, i have a 99.9% chance ya'll are gonna tell me i gotta get a different hydrullic system...

What about my current SROD, can it handle a 351 ? I plan to do everyday driving and idk bout a track but i might wonder out to one with a friend.. lol

Thanks!

You can re-use your existing master cylinder. You would just need a new plastic hose and internal slave.

The plastic is pre-bent and I doubt you could get it to fit the internal slave.

The hose can be disconnected from your master cylinder by removing the roll pin.

Also looks i can use the same mount!! yea less money, Can The Crossmember for the tranny mount be moved? Or do i have to pull a crossmember from a donor truck?

If you look around where the hose goes into the slave or master, you should see a small hole that runs perpendicular to the hose. Just put a small punch or jewelery screwdriver in the hole and tap the pin out either side.

Not to bring my old thread back up, but i'm now in possession of the M5OD R2, I'm redoing all the seals front to back and i think i'm realizing what you all mean by plugs on top, i found a hole in the front middle which it seams possibly that the internal middle rod that moves as you shift is sitting behind this hole. Here is the pics, is this what i gotta plug up? :-)
