I have a question on trans temps. Right now all I have is the "idiot light" gage, and it shows "operating" temperatures very quickly, even when cold outside. I just read in another forum that tex25025 said that his trans once showed 160F within about 5 minutes, and that it shows something is wrong. I am just looking for a little insight as to what problems/things I need to look for, and does this mean I may need a new trany soon.

The stock gauge goes to the middle at a pretty low temp, trans gauge always comes up before engine temp.

That about describes it. I have always been rather amazed at the fact that the gage will go to the middle after about 5 miles when it is 20deg outside.

This is in "post #3" of this thread, but I thought I would repeat it ..............

The "Factory" transmission temp gauge, it is a glorified "idiot" light as its response is severely dampened. The panel gage will show the temp as fully warmed up at 50 *F. Between 100-220F the needle will remain in the same position on the gauge. At 230F it will move up slightly to the middle of the normal range. At 250F it will move to Yellow. The gage moves to red at 280. This is supported on page 36 of the OBDII Theory and Operations manual. The tow/haul light will flash at 275.

Whats up guys. Heres the deal. I picked up my '05 6.0 from the dealer after they installed a new turbo, oil cooler, egr cooler, and radiator. As i was driving home,(not even 10 miles) the tow haul light started flashing and everytime it would try to shift into 3rd(i think) it would literaly LOCK down like you slammed on the brakes. Once you slowed down/stopped it would "unlock" again until 3rd. What do you think?
Here is a list of codes the ford house just gave me..P0700, P0772, and P2704 hope that helps.
THANKS guys, Verlin

It's about general information on the TorqShift, it's not for specific troubleshooting of your problem.

You would probably have a better response if you started a new thread about your problem.

I would replace solenoid E to start with.

Brickie's great link was "broken", so I did some searching and I think the link below is to the article he found:

http://atsg.com//dyndata/articles/pd...0Torqshift.pdf

Lots of good info in it!

At what temp does the tranny fluid boil?
I just had tranny fluid come out my dipstick (maybe a quart) after a very intense 30 minute (6-9% grade) pull in 85 degree heat pulling a 10k 5th wheel.
Gauge was reading 2 line widths below 'yellow'.
Could something inside have overheated causing this at a relatively low temp?
Next day ran great and never heated again but only 70 degrees outside temp.
Enjoying your info- love learning this stuff!!!

The exact temperature varies with the type of ATF, and I forget the exact temperature. I do remember that it is above 400°F. You didn't get it hot enough to boil the ATF.

If you pushed fluid out of the dipstick you almost certainly were overfilled.

That's good to know!
Is fluid coming out the dipstick the 'weakest link'?
IE before something else is damaged???
I read there is a pressure release valve- could that have stuck when it got hot?

The boiling point of Mercon SP is in excess of 536 *F

More importantly when the fluid is puking, the auto ignition point is probably around 700 *F.
