Check this out, Exhaust Pipe

So, early last week I notice my car was sounding different. It was a bit louder and didn't have the usual Magnaflow note. I figured one of the clamps had come loose so I climbed under there this morning and found this:

Looks like I'll get a chance to test the Magnaflow lifetime warranty.

i would think that they should fix it for free, but, since it's not on the muffler itself that came apart, they might charge you to reweld it up. thats why i have my own shop at home with a good wire welder. i fix my own stuff. sorry to hear about your problem though.

If that's a stock pipe, take it back to Ford and have them weld it. whoever, or whatever welding machine was used needs to go back to school. They overheated the pipe attaching the hangar. Obviously.

I'm fully expecting Magnaflow to just ship me a new section of pipe. Its only about 18" long. There is no chance that I'm going to remove it and send it back for re-weld. I assume that would take atleast a week and I still need my car to drive to work, pick up the kids, etc. If I were to drive it without that section of pipe it would be loud and illegal. We'll see what they have to say tomorrow when I give them a call.

EDIT: The pipe is from Magnaflow, it came with the Cat-back kit 16614.

was the hanger already welded onto the pipe? if it was, then, yes. Magnaflow will send you a new one.

you got me curious about my kit #16614

I'll snap pics later, but Magnaflow is about to get a Warranty Claim for the entire damn thing. There is no way in hell my exhaust is SS. The factory pipe is less corroded than the Maggie pipes

I am peeved
not been a good week for my truck...broken mirror, broken headlight, rusting out exhaust, just noticed how faded out my plastic pieces are

I'm right there with ya, I know you told me it was just surface rust when I posted but I definitely don't want any rusting through.

mine used to look like what Bridge posted. Just some light light surface rust and the discoloration

but now...crap, it looks like it has been outside for 10 yrs. I installed it in Nov 2006 and it only saw 1 winter. Truck has been in Hawaii since Oct 2007

btw, truck has never been in the water or on the beach longer than 15-20 minutes

I was going to inquire about the amount of rust as well when I call them. I've never seen stainless rust completely over like that before. I went to home depot and got a metal pipe sleeve and cinched it on there so I don't sound like an angry teenager when I drive around. She sounds back to normal now.

This crap is still ongoing. I can't get performance peddler to answer calls (I "accidentally" get disconnected when I call) or return emails. I called Magnaflow and they gave me a direct number to Peddler and the name of someone who runs the operation. Its only a short little piece of pipe for crying out loud!

that sucks man...I wonder why they discontinued that exhaust?

yours is worse than mine was, but my 16614 was starting to do that crap as well. I wonder if Magnaflow had a bad bunch or something?

They're all hoping you'll just become frustrated and give up. It's actually a pretty common tactic.

Welding stainless steel can reduce its corrosion resistance properties. Improper selection of weld filler material or not using one at all, can remove the corrosion resistance properties of the stainless in the weld joint and heat effected zone. This can happen in both 300 and 400 series stainless. I would put money on their welding process having inadequate process controls and they are likely buying 400 series stainless that has the chromium on the low end of the allowable tolerance.

How long did this system last? I've got about a year and a half on my Magnaflow SI/SO and surely have not been impressed with the quality of the components. This has me wondering how long before one of my weld joints fails.

Good luck getting this resolved.

I think it might have something to do with the fitment issues...I could never get mine looking right and one of the hangers from the factory was way off to start. I'm sure I'll end up talking with someone from MagnaFlow again before this is all over, I'll make sure and ask them why they discontinued a popular exhaust on one of the most popular models of the most popular car/truck in the US. Makes no sense.

Almost two years to the day...

There is ZERO chance I'll let this slide. I let it go for the past couple of months because my wife and I had more important things to worry about (our daughter went into Texas Children's for her third heart surgery three weeks ago...she's five). Now that were getting back to normal...IT'S ON.
