The 5.4's overhead cams & aluminum heads make it considerably larger than a 351. There's also a huge amount of wasted space ahead of a 5.4, so no shortage of space, the 351 will fit. However you're likely to find that all the work neccessary "to swap" may be "more of a beast" than you bargained for.

What is done to the windsor to make it better than a 5.4? Also, realize that unless you plan on doing custom harnesses and such, your electronics wont work right.

Edit: that 351 wont do any better than a 5.4 with a truck with big tires and stock gears. You should do a gear swap to like 4.56s.

For someone else to do them it wont be cheap. For parts and installation, it would be probably be around $900. That would be just a guess, i'm not sure how many hours a shop would charge for front and rear gear install.

Bobby...

I'm here in the cape.....and you've probably seen my truck (everyone has)....

I'm running 39.50's and wanting to change the gears as well. Here is the deal with that....

Gear price

Mechanical Catalog
Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
F7UZ4209AF $946.65 $0.00 $795.19
Universals & rear axle - Rear axle - Differential - Ring & pinion

This is for the 8.8, and the gear set is 4.30. I already get 7mpg, and 4.56 seemed a bit dramatic for a street demon that still has to tow....

This is gear only...no install. Rear install is fairly easy....but on the front (ifs w/ lift.....whollycrapolly).....everything has to be dropped...

At the end of the day.....doin it yourself...under 2k. Hire someone....over 3k

So is your truck the zebra-ish(?) truck or the Farmboy Fab truck? The Farmboy Fab truck I have seen come to the parts department where I work at a few times... i work at Sam Galloway Ford.

Definetly dont do Ford gears, they are extremely expensive. I paid around $550 to replace essentially everything in my rear axle (R&P,every bearing and seal, 6 qts of 75w140/friction modifier, and the LS clutch/steels.) But I shopped around for a while and got alot of good deals.

Hell I run my 4.56s on my 265/75s(32s), I run around 2700 rpms at 70mph. If I was you, I would go with at least like 4.88s unless you drive on the highway alot.

If you have a 8.8 it should be a little cheaper, parts for the 9.75 are pretty expensive.
