thanks for the info. I wonder where I could find out what they did to these old tanks - and possibly the Bronco II tanks as well.

Thanks number. Is there a picture of the tank? Is it an in cab type tank with a shape like the one in my 74 crew so as to possibly "bolt" into my truck? I think it is based on the part numbers, etc. in your earlier post.
You also said in that earlier post that these tanks (NON-evaporative version) are reproduced by Blue Oval Parts. Maybe I could use one with vented fuel cap. I would still be concerned about what the tanks are coated with and would look into that if I get one.

You show that the same tanks were used with gas and diesel, but I wonder if they knew back then that the diesel reacted with the certain coatings?

That's a good point...this parts catalog was last printed in 1975, so...

The in-cab tank will fit thru 1977, but you'll have to change one fitting and the filler hose.

DOTZ9002A = This is the SAME tank BLUE OVAL has reproduced.

Since this is a NON vented tank (as original)..you'll have to use a vented fuel cap, otherwise...

Cool deal - looks like I might have to call Blue Oval and see if the tanks are diesel safe. Who wants to bet they don't know what the coatings they use for these things are....

As for changing the one fitting and the filler hose - do you know what the exact differences are? I would assume the filler location was a bit higher or lower on the ealier trucks and hopefully the actual hose connecting that to the tank could be changed. Is that correct - or close?
What about the fitting? I would think since I will be running new fuel lines this shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks.

The filler neck is different as is the hose, because the body style changed in 1973.

There's only a few inches of space between the neck and the tank.

If you use a flexible filler hose, or one with a slight bend, there shouldn't be an issue.

Poly Tank

I picked up a poly tank from a 97 F-450 Superduty Diesel....It will fit between the frame rails on a Highboy....Not sure of the capacity...but looks to be pretty good sized....I haven't put it up in the frame to see how it sits..but by the measurements it should work quite well....I may have to drain it out and crawl under "Old Yeller" just to see for fun...LOL

Hmmm - what are the overall dims on that tank? I am still trying to figure this one out, but I will most likely build a custom, aluminum tank for it. My problem is trying to fit my winch back there along with the tank. I have looked at the Bronco II tanks and it seems just barely too big with the winch there. I am in the middle of figuring out just how far back I can get that winch to mount, so I can see how much room I have left between the winch and axle.

The Poly tank from the F-450....has a big top on it...Not sure if it has a fuel pump in it or not....But i'm sure it has a return line on it....I'll try and snap a couple pics of it so you can see what it looks like.

Thanks. I had looked at a rear tank from a 2004 F-450 a guy was parting out, but it looked way to big to fit between the frame rails on the highboys. Maybe this one being from an older body style will work...

In cab tank

I'm with Festus Hagen: I'm too chicken. I would go with the '87-'97 behind the axle 17 gal. or aftermarket, 36 gal. tank with the in tank fuel pump, and get that tank out of the cab. Any good boneyard can help you with the plumbing (hoses, valves, connectors, wiring) even an in-tank low pressure fuel pump. Gastanks-r-us got the stuff.
Good luck, my friend, be safe.

I decided on not using the stock (or replacement) in cab tank a while ago. I'm not too concerned with it being in the cab as it is diesel and not quite as flammable as gas, but still - the capacity isn't there.

I will most likely build a custom aluminum tank for the rear. For what people want for aftermarket stock tanks I can make my own to the shape and capacity I desire for less...
