2 groove Y-block vib damper
Howdy all,
I have gotten most of the "stuff" required to get my high mount water pump installed and the high mount fan.
Problem is, I have a crankshaft damper (2 narrow grooves) for narrow (probably 1/2") belts and it appears that the fan sheave is a 3/4" belt drive (it actually has 2 grooves too but both are wide)
Was there a belt drive for the high mount fan that used a narrow belt? (obviously there's a 2 sheave damper that has at least 1 groove that's "wide")
I have a 59 or so 292. The water pump was for a 56 272 but I think it doesn't matter what the water pump is for. The fan mount fits it ok but the belts are not going to work at all...
Thanks,
Rick

Rick, I would try running what you have with a narrow belt. There is a fair chance it will work even on the wider water pump pulley. That was similar to a setup I had at the very beginning of all this, and it spun the pump fine.
Eventually changed the wide H20 pump pulley to narrow car style when the alum. water pump was put on, but not because the previous setup didnt work.

Hi Mike,
It's not the water pump pulley that's wide, it's the groove on the fan mount itself. (it's a 'high mount' fan......the fan doesn't bolt to the water pump shaft.....)
The water pump pulley is actually going to be just right.
The grooves are so wide on the fan pulley that I'm sure it'll just slip like the "dickens" (Although I am not really sure how a dickens slips!! )
It's not the end of the world though. If i don't find the correct fan mount I'll just take this one and chuck it up in a lathe and remove the wide groove. I can easily turn out the inside of an other pulley to fit I guess and just press it on the hub.
I am guessing that I have the "wrong" damper. I suppose there were dampers that have a wide outer groove and a narrower inner one.
I also have the bolt on pulley to add another (third) pulley to it for the power steering.

The pump mounted pulley I was talking about had a 5/8 inch groove. The 1/2 inch belt set way down, but there was no slippage. I dont know the relative drag between water pump vs. fan, but the water pump is significant, plus I was running at that time a little 15 inch mechanical fan. I would still give it a try. If it slips, oh well.

wide belt 292 fan
I believe the main use for 3/4 wide fan belts was 60 amp generators used in school busses police cars etc.. All my 59 cars have had 1/2" belt grooves. I had a lot of trouble when I converted to 60 amp alternator in 1974 with belt slipping, cruised the junkyards and found one dual 1/2" fan pulley . No extras. Good luck finding one now.
