Being of a shifty nature

I naturally gravitate to a nice fat knob I can manipulate,
causing slick meshing of internal components:

this combined with a smooth clutch release,
and it gets me where I want to go.

And my wife loves me too.

Maybe the autos have gotten smarter. I have a manual because when pullin a trailer up hills more often than not, I have been in a situation were the auto shifs up and down sort of like in between gears. Too fast for a down shift, to slow for an upshift. With a manual it goes where I put it.

Help me understand how you are able to shift your manual transmission into the proper gear but you can't drop the automatics shifter into the next lower gear?

The autos run from sensors and the computer. The autos I have driven even if you place the selector in 1 2 3 D or what ever you put it in, if the computer senses you are going to fast for that gear it will not go in. Same under a load. If you are going to slow for an up shift and the computer senses you are going to slow for that gear, IE lugging it. it will not go into that gear.

I guess I have not seen one yet that if shifting back and forth between gears, does not quit when you drop the selector to the next lower gear.

I have driven manuals on all but one of my vehicles, starting back in the mid 60's, so I'm pretty comfortable with them. Maybe they have autos now, that shift when you want them to shift. I guess I will find out with my next truck. No option there. I know for sure I can squeeze better mileage from a manual.

The autos let you keep them from up shifting, but they will not alow you to up shift "too early." So if your trans is hunting, you can stop that by keeping it on the lower gear. But if your going "too slow" for a higher gear it won't let you up shift.

the big deal is that ford is taking away something that some of us enjoy using. for some of us a truck is not merely a way to get from point a to point b, we enjoy the actual driving part of it. you should have the option to get what you want on a truck and we should have that same option.

Can you take the torqshift out of overdrive and make it run in 4th gear? I was under the impression you either had overdrive or had to drop it to third gear. That would give the manual a big advantage if you had a load or speed which really needed to be in 4th gear.

No one knows if the torqshift will run in 4th gear?

I am assuming our 2004 E450 6.0 has a Torqueshift Tranny? If so it has a button on the end of the shifter that allows you to lock out overdrive and run in 4th.

Unless a auto has a gear selector which allows the selection of any gear by choice, I really don't care to have one. I hope with the new transmission ford thinks about paddle shifting.
