4.6l smokes after long idle
I've got a 93 Towncar 4.6l high miles 190,000. It runs fine but has lately started to smoke when I first accelerate after sitting for more than 4 minutes at idle. Less time no smoke more time more smoke. No smsoke on startup. The smoke is blue thus oil.
What experience have others had on whether this is typical valve problem or ring problem or something else??

That is perfectly normal on a '93 TC, especially with that mileage. The valve seals were improved for 1996, which is why you only see it on the earlier Panthers. The valve seals can be changed in the vehicle.

As Steve91 says the earlier valve seals going bad are commom on these. Problem is the replacements are the exact same as the original, usually they don't even come close to lasting the 190K you got out of them especially over the course of 11 years. The www.crownvic.net site can give you some really good info, but there are a lot of posers and pretenders over there that try to lead one astray.

i just bought a 95 t-bird w/ the 4.6 engine, and i had the very same smoke problem with mine. i took it to my tech. and he said it was the valve stem seals. so i had him replace them and it fixed it, no more smoke. this car only has 76,000 mi. on it ,he told me that this is a common problem on the 4.6 from 95 back. the seals he put in came from ford , part #F6AZ-6571-AA which is a 96 part number, this is supposed to be the fix for this problem. cost wise, it cost me $492 for the repair and to me it was well worth it. the car is in great shape other wise, looks and runs good. hope this maybe helpful info for you.

Valve Stem Seals
I used to have a Crown Vic with the 4.6l engine. Mine did the same, and I had the valve stem seals replaced at my local Ford dealer. It cost me around $ 450 and solved the problem. Seems like a lot of money to put some $ 20 seals in. But it is a lot of work and no fun job.
