OK, here are the pics of how I change the oil filter from the top.

Using a 10mm wrench, remove the bolt that holds the air intake in place.

Next, pull the air intake out of the black box that contains the air filter and swing it out of the way.

Now you have a clear view of the oil filter and access to it.

Just kneel on the front bumper and lean over the radiator and you will be able to reach the oil filter with a strap type oil filter wrench.

Loosen the filter with the wrench and then remove it by hand. You will have almost no mess. They don't come much easier than this.

I now can see why you would change the oil filter from the top on a (4x2) much lower to the ground. But the (4x4) is high enough to get under with out jacking up . "To Each His Own" The important thing is that the oil & Filter is getting changed

It has nothing to do with the ground clearance. I was laying under the truck on my first attempt to change the filter. There is too much stuff in the way to loosen the oil filter with my strap wrench from the bottom, so I decided to go at it from the top. It proved to be very easy and very clean. I would change it the same way on a 4x4 if I had one.

tylus has a good reputation on FTE. tylus has a good reputation on FTE.
a properly installed oil filter should only be hand tight

you lightly oil the gasket, then run the filter up until you get contact. then continue past that point 1/2 an additional turn...and this is all BY HAND

using a wrench to install a filter only overtightens the filter and squashes the gasket...you should only need a wrench to remove the filter if it's the very first time the oil has ever been changed (Factory puts the filter on with a dry gasket...very big PITA to remove)

btw, my the top of my radiator shroud is almost chest high on me...and I'm 6'3"...there ain't no way I'm going from the top. the bottom is easily accessible.

All oil filters look pretty much alike, how hard could it be to find... on any vehicle? You will also want to know where the oil pan drain plug is too. Get that manual.

I have an FX4 and go from the top as I get better grip on the filter. I also tighten by hand.

When I change mine I just take a screwdriver and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain.

use a wrench with a handle that swivels. placed your driain pan under the front cross member, the oil will hit the plastic catch pan and drain mostly towards the back. dont dump all of the oil out of the filter until you pull it down. this takes every bit of two minutes.
