4R100 slipping clutches

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-17-03 AT 11:46 AM (EST)] Just heard from the shop that my tranny needs a rebuild. Its in a 98 Expedition with 67k. Its slipping badly when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Quoted me $2500 to fix. Ford dealer accused me of towing in overdrive, stating that was the reason for the problem.
First of all, i dont tow in OD unless its staying there. Seccond, wouldnt it burn up the OD clutches, and not 1st-2nd? I dont see how it would be related.
Im thinking of buying a rebuilt tranny and doing the swap myself, but dont know whether to go with a ford, or someone else. Dont want to go thru this again in another 67k.
Anyone have any ideas?
Tryin to decide if i really want to keep this thing or not.

Thanks
