48-50 12 volt heater motor swap

I used the search feature, looking for the applicable heater motor post, but it seemed every post, but came up. I want to try to swap a 12 volt motor to the original heater in my '50. It isn't one of those deluxe magic air heaters, just a plain jane, with the doors to let heat into the cab. I dismantled the heater , took out the motor, and played with the heater from my donor but the stock motor is 2 1/2" deep while the Crown Vic heater is 3 3/4 so doesn't look like it will work. Looks like I'll have to do some searching to find an appropriate replacement motor. I think someone used a Siemens VDO PM354 in their project.

Heater update

I got the heater installed this weekend; instaled the 12 volt fan motor, trimmed shaft to shorten it to fit. Also re-plumbed the bottom pipe to come out at same elevation as top one. Hopefully my solder will hold. It looks pretty good, will post pic if it doesn't leak !

Great Job!

Boy I sure wish they would pu tth eold search engine back in. Seems like folks are looking for stuff that we have talked about, but I know for a fact the new search doesn't find anything.

Seems like a lot of the old timers and me too (POKE) are just republishing links lately.

Anyway, I hope it works for you. BTW the household 1/2 inch copper plumbing fittings will fit perfect on your heater tubes - just don't get them so hot they unsolder from the core!

I've written to IB Adrian twice about the bad search and gotten no answer. I'll bug Morris (FOMOKO) about it again. Nag nag nag!

Julie, you are so right about the search. I hate to waste the members time if I can get the info I know is here but I had to start a new thread on the door latch as one example. This place is loaded with good info and newbie's like myself don't need to fillit up with old questions.
Thanks for all your help.

Don't worry about wasting peoples time, doing things this way for now is the way it is.

Recognizing that, I spent a weekend reviewing all my old posts and saving the most applicable 30 (most asked) as "favorites" that I can open in a second IE window and copy the URL. So it only takes me a second to find them now. It's pretty amazing, but with rare exception, the same 30 or so questions keep coming up - so answering and refering folks to the info is a snap now.

I also created 15 new galleries and uploaded all my pictures, exploded assembly drawings, electrical drawings, parts pictures, and specs from the Salesmans Handbook for quick reference as well.

Ya gotta do whatcha gotta do!
