I took apart my housing and found where the top peice connects with the bottom peice there is a rubber seal, rusted and deteriorated I was wondering whether to peel it out, clean the seal grove and put it back together, without the rubber seal, is this rubber seal replaceable?
this is the original circular rubber seal that goes around the top cover and sits on the circumfrence of the bottom housing creating a seal for keeping crap out of the cleaner and carb?
I guess I'll keep going with this one. I took it out and found that it is some what of a felt/ fabric. A single length 1/4 in square approx.. It is needed in order to keep the top part of the housing sitting properly with the bottom and obviously keep it air tight. I guess I'll find out if its replacable tommorow.
It sure is tough cleaning this housing inside and out. very greasy, trying to keep any water and solvents beyond the interior of where the filter sits. Dont want that area rusting too.
Napa and Partsource here in southwestern ontario didn't have it and looked at me like i was out of this world. couldn't believe it... went to canadian tire where i usually go first and in two minutes i had the part number and which store had one. by this time my kids were ready to kick me if i pulled into another parts store so i gave up for the day.
get you some gasket paper, and make one, not too tough to do. find something round that fits around the carb where the air cleaner sits {jar mabe} set it on the gasket paper, and draw around it. do same for inside circle. take a sharp razor knife, and there's your new gasket.
I wish I had a picture to begin this thread cause what I am talking about is not where the top peice of the air cleaner housing meets the carb but where the top peice of the housing connects to the bowl. sorry fo the misunderstanding.
I understood you. My 83 original air cleaner seal is like a 1/4 inch rubber that goes around the edge, I suspect totally proprietary. Its very important cause the only air that gets inside must go through the filter. I advise hitting the yards.

I was thinking about using that foam strips that you jam into gaps before you caulk. Right know theres a 1/4 inch engine tubing that I put in, but it sits high so the bowls not quite sitting where its supposed to. Thanks for all the feedback and terms.
