I usually just fill my hand with it, and make sure that every lobe is covered, then coat all the lifters also.

I use a product called Lubriplate Engine Assembly Lube, and have used it for 30 years or more. Never had a problem.

Use the lube that comes with the cam. Use the lifters the cam manufacturer recommends. That way, if there is a problem, and oyu followed all the steps to the letter, it's on them, and not you. It's a comp cam right? It's comes with a lube, and just put it on the lobes and the gear and smear it around. Put it on the bottoms of the lifters too.
ok that makes sense. since i took apart the motor should i do any thing to the crank and cyl. at assembly or should they be ok when i prime the oil pump.or after i mean
Did you pull the crank and rods and such out? If not, then you don't really need to do anything but prime the oil system, so that you know you have good clean oil in the system before start up.
any of the quality fleet oils are good...shell, rotella, delo 400. Our engine parts supplier, and engine long block supplier will not honor the warranty if delo or it's equivelant is not used during break in.
