C-6 rear seal question

C-6 rear seal question
Last week I noticed a few drips of tranny fluid on the garage floor. So I decided while I had it jacked up to do an oil change, I would also put in a new seal. To make a long story shorter, it now leaks worse than before.
I was careful when installing, and wet the seal and drive shaft with fluid before puting the drive shaft back in.
Is there any tricks I should know about? Should I use some kind of sealer around the outside of the seal ring when installing?

There is a bushing that is pressed into the extension housing. It can get burrs on it...which will eat into the seal.
When you replace the seal, you should also replace the extension housing bushing (B5AZ7A034A).
The bushing is the same for all C6's, the rear seal is not the same.
1966/72 C6's use one seal (B3TZ7A011A), 1973 and later C6's use another (D5AZ7052A).
If the ID tag is still bolted to the case (drivers side, adjacent to the servo cover), post the code from it.
I can tell you exactly what the trans is from, and what year it is.

Check to make sure the garter spring on the inside of the seal is still in place. I always pack grease behind the lip to protect it and keep the spring in place. Also make sure that the extension housing did not become gouged when removing the old seal.
on the yoke check for grooves and wear on the seal surface area where the seal rides. If the yoke is badly worn to the extent it is badly grooved or is a smaller diameter where the seal rides you will need a new yoke. When they wear like this, the old seal became old with it and conformed to the irregularity over time, but with a new perfectly round seal they will leak like crazy.
Also, check to make sure the seal did not get overly distorted when installing.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, I'll get it jacked up this weekend and take a look.
N.D. I'll see if I can find that I.D. tag and get back to you.
The only info I had when purchasing the seal was knowing that it was a mid 70's truck tranny.
I pretty much destroyed the old seal getting it out and didn't save it.

Update: After driving my truck about 15-20 miles this past week, I parked it in the garage for two days. I pulled the truck out of the garage to attend a local cruise night, and when I checked the garage floor there were no more drips there. After attending the cruise I put it back in the garage. Two days now and still no more drips.
Does it sound logical that the leaking seal fixed itself?
