Bent Pushrods on my 1997 7.3 Powerstroke

Has anyone experienced or heard of pushrods bending? Driving down the highway last week my truck began missing and running badly. Upon removal of the valve covers I found #2 cylinder had bent pushrods a broken lifter retainer, the lifters were out of place just laying there. Any ideas what may have coused this?

I can’t imagine how that could happen????? I was driving 65 mph at 2200 rpm when my truck began missing and running bad, It would blow white exhaust when I accelerated after that. I may have hydrolocked it when starting it after that.
After re-starting it never blew white exhaust again.
I am trying to understand what may have happened before replacing the pushrods and lifters.

Millmike:
Had you done any type of maintenance or work of any type on the engine immediately prior to this happening?

Did you or have you ever used starting fluid to start this engine?

Just fishing.

I had a bent pushrod on mine when I got it, had a headgasket replaced prior. My guess it was installed or it hydrolocked because they didnt empty all the fluids from the cylinder.
Good news is they are real cheap from Ford....like $40 for 4...had to buy a pack of 4 in my case.

A seized lifter make since to me.
The only maintenance in the last couple of months was an oil change, fuel and air filters. This truck has never had a valve cover removed prior to this.
I have used starting fluid to start the truck a couple of times on very cold winter days in Jan.. I sprayed a quick shot into the air filter housing prior to cranking the truck.

My intake lifter came out in pieces, I believe my exhaust valve is bent.
There is a little mark on the #2 piston indicating to me the piston hit the exhaust valve.
I am puzzled on how this happened.

I am taking the head to the shop tomorrow to have it thoroughly checked out, and most likely the exhaust valve replaced.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

weak valve spring can cause it too. How many miles on the engine?

Well now, there's your problem! Ether will bend push rods. You're lucky there wasn't an explosion...well maybe there was, but it happened in the cylinder instead of intake.
