New Tires
Well I'm looking to pick up a new set of tires sometime this spring. I have the 255/65/17 Generals that Ford uses stock and I'm looking for something a little bit bigger. I don't have any leveling kit so it would have to fit with the stock height. I was looking at the Cooper Discoverer ATR. Does anyone have any input on this tire? Also does anyone have a suggestion as to what size to get? Thanks in advance!

According to Consumer Reports the Cooper tires weren't rated as well as the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's or Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's. Of the 14 different brands that they tested the Cooper tires rated number 9. They were rated below average on wet braking, ice braking, rolling resistance and tread life. Check out Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels for some good comparisons on tires. Their site seems to coinside with Consumer Reports on comparisons more times than not. They also have customer reviews that I've found helpful.

4x4 or 4x2
can't remember...the size of your OEM makes me think 4x4 though
I highly highly suggest the Wrangler Silent Armour. I bought a set of 265/70/17 last month and have nothing but good things to say about them. Paid $860 for them installed out here in Hawaii...so you can probably cut $150-200 off that price for Mainland Tire Shops.
btw, the biggest OEM tires sizes are 32" (275/65/18, 275/55/20) for the 4x4. the 265/70/17 is a 33" (almost anyways) and will fit your truck without a leveling kit. You'll get about 1/2" of wider tire, and about 0.75" of height. Fills that wheel well rather nicely IMO

Discount Tire has always done me right. They even buy your old tires if they aren't too old/bad condition. Plus they can price match and work with you on the pricing.
I was needing tires and had my eyes on 3 different ones. I just happened to get lucky and a local shop had one of them on sale. I kept my options open, and it really paid off. Don't get stuck on having to buy just 1 tire and nothing else.

The Silent Armors look really nice but for $200 a pop that price is hard to swallow. Any other suggestions?
Oh and also I don't remember which load range I'd need. It has to do with towing right? I do tow a 9000 pound boat somewhat frequently during the summer so I would need something suitable for that as well as something that is decent in snow for the winter.

Load range C will do you just fine in a LT tire.
Maybe bump it up to a D tire if you tow alot. I'd avoid a E range though. They are stiffer than hell.
as it is, you are gonna see a huge ride change fom the P rated Generals to a LT tire. If you want to keep a P rated, the Silent Armour is a bit cheaper. The LT version is roughly $30 more/tire

I use Tire Rack's prices and get a price match from Discount Tire. I could use either place since I live in South Bend, In but Discount Tire has a shop 1.5 miles from the house and Tire Rack is clear north of town. In your case you'd have shipping to worry about. But I'd see if Disount Tire will price match Tire Rack's price on whatever tire you choose.

I had the same size from the factory, P255/70/17. I get all my wheels from Discount Tire Direct, but they are sometimes higher in price on tires. I went up to a LT285/70/17, and instead of the 'P' series for passenger tire which they put on from the factory, I upgraded to a 'LT' light truck tire for a thicker sidewall and heavier load rating. I get mine from STS TIRE CENTER. I usually run TOYOS on everything I own, but I ended up with the Firestone Destination A/T's. They run me about $150.00 a tire; About $30.00 cheaper a tire than the Toyos. They have a nice tread pattern, but until I run them for a while cant say much about them, except for the good reviews they get.

I have the Cooper Discoverers as well and they are wearing great and give pretty good grip in winter.
I'm looking for a set of larger tires for the summer on my stock rims(18's) at the moment. I did some searching and apparently my stock rims are 7.5" wide. I see that some here are putting tires on that call for a minimum of 8.5". What are the implications with going larger than recommended? Thanks.
