2.9L to 4.0L conversion

Hi there, me and my father have recently bought a 1991 Ford Ranger pick up 2wd with a 2.9 liter that the idiot we got it from forgot to put oil in it and pulled off a rod cap put it back on and did not tighten the nuts, and he did not understand the gauges. and then ran it that way for two weeks before it finally quit. luckily we were able to salvage the block and heads, and will use it for another Ford project. But me and my dad have put in a 4.0L engine out of a 1994 explorer to replace the 2.9L and have the 4.0L wiring harness to finish the conversion. but the question is can I use a starter out of a 2.9L on a 4.0L?

It depends, if you used the 2.9 flywheel, then the 2.9 starter will work. If you used the 4.0 flywheel, you will need the 4.0 starter.

He probably has it figured out by now. The last post was from March 2009. Sometimes you miss the date on the post when responding. It happens…..
