Dp Tuner 80E fuel economy..

I know its a little early since I've only put a 100 miles on my truck since the install, but my "lie-o-meter" wasn't to far off in comparison to my hand calculated mileage prior to this. After my install, the lie-o-meter was showing around 12.6. Of course, some of my driving since has been just toying around making smoke.. being heavier on the skinny pedal than usual...

I reset the lie-o-meter yesterday, ran an few errands & then went to work which is a 26-27 mile round trip. I pulled in the driveway last nite & the MPG showed 20.2 !!! I don't ever recall my average being that high in everyday run around driving.

Now I know its really early, so I'm going to fill my tank up & get the truth, as I know the meter is not the most accurate thing in the world. I'm just curious though.. have others shown a substantial gain? Does something with the DP tuner have an effect on the lie-o-meter? I have notice that it runs a lower RPM while cruising along, I'm guessing about 150-250 lower than it had been running at 60-65 mph, but can the 80E make that much of a difference, cause if so, i'm impressed...

Gregg, you can not believe the meter once you get tuned, it will lie most of the time. When I first put my injectors in and had a re-burn from Jody, I was getting 57.7 on that meter, after I went to him and got live tuning, the meter is at 27.9 right now. Do your calculations by hand and you will have a true reading.

don't trust the meter!!! If I can keep my foot out of the go pedal then I will see about a 2-3 mpg difference. Buy I have found that I get better mileage with it on the stock setting because I don't have the urge to put my foot in it

Sounds like a bit of honest experience, stated honestly! "Knowing your limits" is only a good thing if you let that knowledge guide your behavior.

Hand calculate fuel mileage for now on. There's a reason why it's called a lie-o-meter. And you are right, toying around with your tuner will not yield the efficency you thought you might get. If you drive like there is a raw egg under the go-pedal, you will see some pretty decent fuel mileage. Have fun!

I swear the tuner tells you to mash the go pedal more often.

LOL..... Nice posts. Best I got with the DP in 80E was about 18.5. I've hit nearly 20 on Tony's tunes, but a lot of other stuff have changed since then. This is ALL hand calculated filling the fuel to the neck every time. If you're hand calculating, you'll need to do the "Harpoon Mod" so you can fill to the neck quickly every fill-up. If you don't, the pump shuts off with about 4 gallons of space left in the tank, and enough slop in the calculation to really throw you off.

I know.. I've been finding myself cruising along & then letting off the pedal.. just so I can mash it again to see the smoke roll... I was taking my daughter to preschool this morning, just cruising along at 40-45, backing off & then accelerating.. I was loving it & laughed out loud.. My daughter asked "whats so funny daddy" ... lol Of course, when my I got home, the wife asked why I didn't take the car (like I usually do cause I get 3 times the MPG) Of all times though, I see diesel just went back up 10 cents a gallon here....

Hmmm, VERY interesting.. I always try & fill it up to the top of the neck.. what a PAIN in the butt.. takes forever.. I'll have to research this.. is it an easy mod? It kills me.. the wife has a diesel jetta & I just assumed it my problem always just because the diesel foamed so much.. The 1st time I filled hers up, it kicked off.. I waited a few seconds , pulled the nozzle out a bit & hit it again & diesel came running out all over the place.. And this was when diesel was over $4/gallon...

Here's the Harpoon mod from Guzzle's page:
http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/harpoon.html

But since you have to drop the tank, look into the "Hutch Mod" too. Most of us have done it and it's DEFINITELY a worthwhile mod. Here's Guzzle's write-up on that one:
Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

I used the ITP kit minus the filter. It's an excellent kit -- well worth the $$$ spent. And if you decide to get it without the filter, you do need something in there. I use a Fram G3 type filter between the pump & tank. Saved my butt once on bad fuel already. Here's what it looks like:

Rob thats hard for me to do. (run in stock that is) We mod, chip, add injectors,Live tune, Bigger Turbos PMS so I guess I will have to give up a little mileage. I do use 80E most of the time and get fair MPG and also have ZIP.
