6.0 4WD ABS light on-no codes to retrieve?

My ABS light comes on but no codes are being stored? The light will usually come on right away, but sometimes it will take a while (approx. 5 to 10 min. drive time. The sensor only has 10 months- 10,000 miles. Is the problem related to a bad sensor or could it be the plug/connection? I had the same problem about 2 years ago but the ABS light would always come on-replaced sensor and it cured the issue until the trans. failed and subsequently replaced trans. What should i do first.

If you are having no other issues like speedo going wild, remove the VSS on the rearend and check for metal particles on the magnet. Sometimes there is enough to keep it from reading and throwing the light on. If you have 4wheel ABS it could be the front wires or trash between the sensor and the hub.

First if there is a light on, there has got to be a code stored there, you just can't retrieve ABS codes with a generic scanner, you need a professional scan tool. I use Autoenginuity with Ford enhancement license.

What high yo silver said is possible and there would be a code there pointing you to something like that. Not in those specific terms, but there would be a code to have you sheck out the vss sensor.

Is your truck lifted? I had the same problem when I turned right the abs light would come on. It would stretch the cable.

Actually, there is a way.

If the brake fluid is low in the master cylinder, the float switch will actually directly turn on the ABS light, AND will disable the ABS.

How does that translate to being able to read codes without a professional scan tool with regard to the ABS?

Which is not true.

You are correct after the SNIP that you need the correct scanner to read ABS codes, but incorrect that there HAS to be a code stored.

Your right, I was too definitive and it shouldn't have been. I gotcha now.

Thanks to all who responded. I will check the areas mentioned. The truck is lifted so how can i check the current flow in the wiring system. I know there are two wires what is the normal flow between the two? and what method should i use to the integrity of the system.

I also have a situation currently were the computer is storing at times up to 6 problem codes (none being the speed sensor). the codes are trans. related ie. temp sensor , trans control module, generator circut , and fuel injection module. and a few other i dont remember right now. These codes came on recently the ABS stuff has been around for a while. Also the tow/haul light will flash once the trans reaches 150 and the trans temp gauge goes flat and the check gauges light comes on. And get this i went to the dealer to get a new trans temp sensor and they told me the truck does not have one. How can u have a temp gauge w/o a sensor. am i lost or was the parts guy up all night?

Wow, starting to sound more like a ground problem, or the battery voltage is too high or too low, or something else.

Too much going on at once.

All the codes were related to a bad temp. sensor in the bottom of the trans. Replaced it and all trouble codes are gone. Now i will ckeck the grounds for the abs light problem. I was told when the ABS light comes on it is sometimes the grounds in front and below the driver side battery.
