Two squirts from an oil can.
If the compression comes up substantially, that would indicate bad rings. If it only comes up a few pounds then it is most likely a valve.
Also, to isolate the leakage (compression loss,) you can put that cylinder at it's top dead center position and put compressed air in the spark plug hole. The you can listen to see where the air is escaping. Intake, exhaust or crankcase, the sound should give you a pretty conclusive answer.
