48-50 metal shroud? under front of engine

Speaking of fan shrouds, what is the purpose of the metal cover that bolts to the bottom of the frame under the front of engine area? whats it called? and does anyone know if they are the same 48-50 to the 51 52?

I have the one that came off a early 50 but have not checked to see if it will fit my 51 yet. did they help with airflow and or cooling ?

Thanks
Josh

Are you talking about this???

I also have these in my collection.

Note how the first one pictured and the one on the left in the second picture are the same, but the one on the left in the second picture has a hole cut out. Also, note how different the one on the right is.

The one up top came out of a 49 Panel with an unknown engine. The others, I believe, were purchased on eBay and should be for a 51 and 52 respectively. However, I may be mistaken. I'm sure that a every engine required its own shield design.

Quite frankly, I forgot that I even had these parts.

While on the subject of obscure parts, I also came upon a set of these...

48-51 fender gravel shields

And a set for 52. Note the different hole positions and bottom curvature of the shield on the left.

I'd have to get under my truck to be sure, but I'd swear my 52 has the upper set of gravel shields (at least mine have a straight bottom). I wonder if those are from a 52 with 215-6? Why would there be a curve in the bottom? I just can't figure what the curve would be clearing?

panelman; yep it looks like the top one, I dont think it had a hole in it, I'll have to look at it again tonight. so they were just a gravel shield I guess.
Thanks

I know the black one pictured in the lower right of the photo is indeed a 52 with a V-8 as it is identical to the one I have on my 52 F-1 which is basically un-restored. It's called either a splash or gravel shield but not really sure what purpose it really serves as most were probably discarded years ago just like the engine splash shields on the Models T's and A's.

Guess cars and trucks are different in this year in this area. From the description of the first post it sounded somewhat like the engine steady rest that bolts to the front of the engine and the cross frame under the radiator.

That cover prevents the air coming in through the grille from exiting under the radiator. You want all the air coming in the grille to go THROUGH the radiator not under it for the most efficient cooling. They are the same from 48 to 50, but not sure about 51 and 52. They are also different between 6 cylinder and eight...or if you move your radiator to the 6 cylinder location for a modern engine. On my truck which originally came with a V8, I moved the radiator forward to the 6 cylinder location and then had to modify the panel by cutting about two inches off off it to use it.

I have mine on the truck, did not have to modify it thou. Moved radiator to six location and it still bolted correcty. Originally had a 239 flathead eight, the hole was for the tube that stuck down from the engine.

I've found that this piece is appearently not only good as a gravel sheild but as a location for all of the oil, greese, coolant and 60 some odd years of dirt to collect.

Mossy, on the passenger side of the truck this piece is easily identifyable by looking for a large shelf under the front engine mount. It will extend from the radiator shrowd to about 4 inches behind the engine mounts. there was so much dirt and **** on mine that I actually had to DIG the engine mount out of it to check the mount. I located this "shield" piece two 5 gallon shop vac loads later and still haven't gotten it all cleaned off.
