460 uses oil??? 1991 F250 4x4 Fuel Injected

1991 F250 4x4 460 Fuel Injected Automatic w/OD. I love this workhorse, It tows my 1936 Dodge 4x4 to the Sand from WA. to Or. and any and all projects on my car trailer for other club members. But I am constantly adding oil to the motor. Where is the oil going? I don't notice that much smoke. Is that engine running so hot that it's burning through the valve guides, and I just don't notice the smoke much. I mean don't get me wrong, it smokes. But for the amount of oil it uses, and not leaking, it seems that you see it in blue smoke. Have these big blocks always been known for oil consumers?

460 uses oil

120,000 miles I bought this truck used in 2004. It had a burned valve, and bad egr valve. Replaced o2 sensors, and has always performed like a bombshell. I really like the responsive power and sure footed feeling. This is due to the F350 front springs I'm sure. I'm just wondering if I should put some new valve stem seals in it.

460s are not oil consumers, start with a new PCV valve, check in the air box for oil coming out of the breather, if its excessive it could indicate bad rings.....valve seals are also a possibility.

460 uses oil

I use 15w/40 Delo. It seems to use oil more noticeably during highway trips at freeway speeds. A trip from Aberdeen Wa. to Sandlake OR. pulling a car trailer with my '36 Dodge loaded on-board it will use about four quarts, two down and two back. That's about a six hour round trip, let's say 300 miles maybe. You get the idea. It seems to smoke during warm start-ups, decceleration, and hard acceleration. I haven't done a PCV for quite awile, so that's a good start. Thank's.

4 quarts in 300 miles, smokes on deceleration...............Time to tear that old veteran down, thats BAD rings...........PCV, isnt going to do anything, you need to tear down and re-build that 460.

My 302 was eating a quart a week when I finally tore it down and the machinist said I was hours away from spinning a bearing.

Definately time for a rebuild with that type of consumption. The previous owner must have treated this poor truck real bad, with only 120,000 miles on the truck it should not use any oil. My dad's '97 460 has 120,000 on it and runs exactly the same as it did when he bought it new. 460s tend to have a long lifespan, burning oil at 120,000 is definately not typical of the 460.

I came across this thread upon researching this topic. I have a 91 f350 that just started smoking bad out of the !eft bank. Num. 1 p!ug is trashed.
It has a s!ight misfire that wi!! c!ean itse!f up every once in awhi!e.
It doesnt seem to smoke much at id!e or when co!d. After driving for a few mins and under acce!eration it smokes bad, but doesnt smoke on dece!.

My question is have any of you guys seen intake sea!ing prob!ems on 460's?
It seems to me that it cou!d be sucking oi! into the intake port.
