I have a lifter like tapping and loss of power

When I had a couple hundred miles on my 2001 Lightning, I noticed a noise that sounded like a lifter tapping. I took it to Ford and they said the 5.4's just make those kind of noises. Also i have noticed a loss of power. Has anyone else had this problem? Or can anyone tell me what it might be causing these problems.

Well, since 5.4ls are OHC (no lifters), I would suspect this: bad coil pac (cracked and "snapping" sound from spark leak?); bearing in pulley on supercharger snout?...whatever it is, it isn't "normal" and your dealer is either clueless or lazy. Find another one who gives a ##### about his customers.

Out of curiosity, have you changed your oil yet, and if you did, did it start after you changed your oil? A lot of Lightnings seem to have a wierd diesel chatter type noise start up right after the 1st oil change. Your dealer is partially right in that the 5.4 SOHC motor makes lots of wierd harmless noises. Mine makes the chatter but it goes away when the engine warms up. As far as the loss of power is concerned, that might be due to the fact that the weather has warmed up a lot lately and it's a lot more humid too, both of which kill power.

Out of curiosity, is there any way you can record this chatter type noise and post it online? If it's the diesel chatter noise, don't worry about it because it will eventually go away. It's been 1500 miles since my last oil change and the diesel chatter noise has disappeared from my Lightning during idle. Some Lightnings lose the chatter in 300-600 miles, while other take time, but in every case except for one, the noise went away. The diesel chatter noise is considered a harmless noise and I wouldn't worry about it, unless it really did it loud. The LS1 and LS6 as well as lots of porshe engines make really wierd noises as well. If you really feel concerned about the noise, call up the manager of the service department at John Nolan Ford and he will explain to you exactly why many 5.4's seem to have that noise. He got too technical for me in his explanation and I kinda stopped paying attention when he was explaining it to me.
