Help. I just bought a used 2005 F150 Supercrew with the 5.4 with 43k miles. All was great until I got home after a 1 hour drive and noticed a knock in the engine. I can hear it under the truck and in the wheel wells the loadest. If i'm in the driveway and accelerate alittle to pull it into the garage, it makes sort of a clatter noise for a second after I let my foot of the gas, then goes back to the knock. I also noticed that the noise seems to go away above 1200 rpms or so. Any ideas? of course it's out of warranty. Thanks for your time.
First off go buy ford ESP extended warranty..... I paid some where around $1800 for 4yr 48k warranty and well worth it. Second does the sound kinda sound like a diesel motor? if so its very common in these motors. you will see many posts about this. And also welcome to the sight..
Thanks for replying. I've thought about getting a warranty. I don't think I would call it a diesel sound. It is more just like a knock. The wierd part is the rattle or clatter after backing of the gas while under a small load like pulling up the driveway.
sounds similar to my truck but it only makes the sound when warmed up nicely ..... i am thinking injectors perhaps. will be interesting to find out what it is. oasis says i have extended warranty on injectors.
slomafarms - how long has yours been making the noise? If I keep the truck I will definately get a warranty. I love the truck. It drives so nice. It's just frusterating to have such a nice truck that knocks.
No modifications at all. I just talked to the local dealer about it and they are saying that maybe the previous owner didn't use a motorcraft oil filter. Who knows. I just changed the oil and used the right filter and mobile 1 oil. No change. Very dis-heartening.
I keep thinking that it must be the phasers from reading on this forum and the TSB on this, however, when i talk to the dealers they tell me they have never had to change these before so they don't think that is what it is. I wish I could trust the local dealer a little more. I have had problems with them in the past that make me a little leary of them. I wonder if I was to get an extended warranty if that would cover the phasers.
Ask them about Ford ESP i would get it now. I almost didnt get mine and i did. A month later tranny went that was $3800 and last month my rear end went and that was another $1800 and each time i paid $100 deduct and best $1800 spent on ESP and best $200 spent on Deduct....
Had the cam phasers changed on my 04. Two dealers told me that it was a normal noise and the third dealer changed them and said it was a very common problem in te 04's and they changed them all the time. Don't trust the dealer, go to another one.
mine has done is since i test drove it a year and a half ago...i was about to say cam phasers but youguys beat me to it...make sure its under warranty!! you will be broke broke broke if its not!!!
I sure appreciate everyones input. It has helped tremendously. I decided to get an extended service plan just in case something happens and drive it. It runs so good, just makes noise at idle. I wish I had another choice for a dealership to work on my truck. Maybe I'll try the sacramento area.
