pulled the heads today ............
well i was tired of trying to straighten the black hole up, so i decided to add to the clutter instead . i pulled my heads off the flatty . unlike our resident cave man i am in awe of the great shape mine is in . other than a lot of carbon on the bolts , and in the cylinders she's in exceptional shape . no leaks around the bolts as i have heard of and been warned of . the gaskets were leaking on both sides , the drivers was the center water ports and the rear ports , the paassenger side was the center ports and the front water ports . no visible cracks or anything paculiar to be seen , and the valve that has the weak spring is intact and undamaged despite being beat on for so long . the lifter galley is ultra clean { something to do with religous 1,000 mile oil changes and constantly fussing over it i think ! } and no gook in it and all else other tha some grinding in the water pumps , is aok . well i'mstill gonna pull her up to replace some gaskets that are leaking a little bit , , a good thorough cleaning , and repaint , as well as replacing a few worn parts , and hopefully a wee bit of a cam . i lied to the wife told her it had a cam lobe that was flat spotting , not totally gone but on it's way ..... BAD KEVIN welp later guys im off to slumber land , 2 am comes too early .

Looks to be in good shape. That carbon should have protected the cylinder walls very well.

Don't ever mistake a flathead for a modern EFI engine! The large combustion chamber tends to soot up easily. Here is mine with about 500 miles on it after its rescue, and after cleaning it up.

Kevin what did you end up with for the rochester? I looked at that option a while back and noticed that the 2bbl comes in different cfm per application. I think that a buick v6 came closest to the same cid as the flatmotor. are you going to use that Merc. intake, the one with the rectangle 4 bolt carb base that you had hanging around the garage? I think that it might be the same pattern as the rochester?
