I read this some place that you may have to go through 5-6 blocks before you fine a usable one. Or maybe the shipper dropped it? I hope you fine one running.

HD74, don't take this the wrong way, but I'd rather have a cracked block before spending $$$ than having the shipper drop a finished motor. I'll take a look at #2 next weekend. As for sleeving, I asked on another flathead forum, and am waiting for opinions. We've sleeved stuff at work, but nothing like this.

I remember from my college auto tech class we were told about dry sleeve and wet sleeve blocks. If that crack is all the way through into the water jacket, I would assume boring the cylinder all the way out and putting a wet sleeve in (thats if it can be done on this engine cant remember what engines it coul be done on) would solve the problem.

A sad sad day, had similar experience with a V-8 that was a 1 year old rebuild.........buggar neglected to tell me it sat outside for six months before he sold it to me........tore the heads off to replace with aluminium heads and viola......rust pits and two sleeves required........now a $1000.00 anchor.

Priceless.......

With all this I am starting to worry about finding something like this in the 292 in the 56 when I take the engine apart to clean it up. I know the car hasnt sat out in the weather and was a very well taken care of vehicle but has sat idle in the same position since 1985

That's why I wasn't holding my breath during the teardown. PO told me it was under plastic all these years until the wind blew the plastic away. The other PO said the engine in the truck was filled up with oil during storage. I pulled the dipstick and saw nothing. My non-running engines are covered pretty well out back, and the runner is inside the trailer house along with the other goodies, lol.

You must have one VERY understanding wife, that allows you to keep all your truck "goodies" inside the house!!!.....LOL!!!....I know my wife would never let that fly!!
Ya know, now that I think about it a old mobile home would make for a great inside storage/ work space......hmmmmmmm

I was able to track down the PO's. Seems like a pair of reputable guys to me.

Why does this-so much damage that is-happen to so many flatheads? Is there some odd, fatal flaw in their design? Thats so sad man, I hope your other plans pull through.

It's what happens when people think something is junk and toss it out behind the barn. For all we know, it cracked and THEN was tossed out behind the barn.

My concern with sleeving is that the sleeve is a dry sleeve, and is depending on the original walls to provide a stable surface for the rings. With a split like that, and distortion of the walls that caused it, I don't see a sleeve being practical. That and you can buy "guaranteed" crack-free blocks for $500; sleeving is going to cost more than that.
